Air Canada to sublease three 767s to Ansett

[TORONTO] Air Canada said it reached a tentative agreement to sublease three Boeing 767s to Australia's Ansett Airlines as the Canadian carrier scales back capacity because of a slowing economy.

The deal cannot be completed until it gives Canadian rivals an opportunity to make an offer for the jets, an Air Canada spokeswoman said.

The provision is contained in undertakings Air Canada made to Canada's Competition Bureau when it took over Canadian Airlines International Ltd last year.

Air Canada is selling or subleasing 71 planes, or about 20 per cent of its fleet, to avoid expanding capacity this year as it adds some of the 41 airliners it ordered from Airbus Industrie and Boeing Co.

In a letter to Canadian carriers on March 9, Air Canada, Canada's largest airline, said it had as many as eight Boeing 767s to sublease.

Canadian airlines that could take delivery of the 767s have a week to make competing bids, Air Canada said. Ansett Airlines is a unit of Air New Zealand.

So that's where the AN 767's are going to come from!!!

It might be good to post this one in the Ansett forum, I'm sure there are some folk (like me) who'd be interested.

Thanks for this http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
