Fuel Surcharge Question
 
I thought Air Canada did not charge fuel surcharges within canada? I am trying to book an aeroplan reward flight yow to yvr.. do they charge fuel surcharges to aeroplan tickets?


Total airport taxes, fees and surcharges (CAD) $150.43 Airport taxes, fees, and surcharges will appear on your credit card statement as an Air Canada charge and will display your ticket number.

They still charge them, but they are included as part of the base fare.

Aeroplan, Avion, etc. will still ding you for it.

Beauty.... so If aeroplan calculates points based on actual fare, which the fee is included, and then charges it as a surcharge, they really are making a killing... Anyone feel we should band together and make our own FF program? haha

The fee goes to AC not Aeroplan; not that it makes any difference to anyones' pocketbook except AC's.

Might as well start up your own airline to go with that FF program. ;)

Just FYI; for your YVR-YOW-YVR flight
distance: 4426mi
fuel cost/available seat: $177.04 (4426 * 0.04)
fuel surcharge (you paid): $54
fuel surcharge as a percentage of amount covered by AC: 44%

Nav Canada charges: $1821.51/aircraft each way (assuming A320)
Actual Nav Canada cost/seat: (2*1821.51) / 146 = $24.95

You fail to state you've also assumed a 100% full flight. Using AC's most recent traffic stats - average loads for Canada in 2010 are 80.7%, the calculation changes to this:

Nav Canada charges: $1821.51/aircraft each way (assuming A320)
Actual Nav Canada cost/seat: (2*1821.51) / (146*80.7%) = $30.92
