baggage check-through

I have a silly question (probably). For the first time ever I will be checking in baggage for an upcoming flight YUL-YYZ-ZRH. Does AC check-through the baggage at YYZ or do I need to collect and re-check it? I presume not as this 1st leg is domestic?

Assuming the whole flight is AC (or SR) then, yes, your bags will be checked through. However on the way back you will need to collect/recheck your bags at YYZ if you're flying ZRH-YYZ-YUL. And, yes, the YUL-YYZ leg is domestic.

Is this the case just because of these particular airports or is it true no matter what airports are involved as long as it's all on AC metal. For instance, I'm going YXY (Whitehorse) - YVR - LHR all on AC - will they check my bags right from YXY to LHR or will I have to go get them in YVR and check them through customs myself? Sorry if this is a dumb question, this is my first non-North American flight ever!

This is the case because they are all AC/codeshare and the first flight is domestic. So, usually, no matter where you fly from within Canada to get an international AC flight at another airport(eg. YYZ, YVR) your bags are checked all the way through to wherever you'd need to go through customs and in Europe, that's usually your final destination (even when transferring within Europe to another flight). I fly from London (YXU) and my bags are always checked through to their final destination in Europe. Like the OP, however, you'll need to get your bags, clear customs and recheck (for you in YVR) when you come back...assuming you're flying the same route in reverse.
