Frequent flyer musician already famous at 15‎; UPDATE: earns Juno nomination!

They kind of overblew it (in every respect)... :o I should tell them to come on to FT! :p:cool:

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more frequent flyer than Jan Lisiecki.

"I don't count,'' laughed the 15-year-old concert pianist. "I think the longest I spent at home this year was a week. I've flown 200,000 miles.''

The incredibly gifted Lisiecki is slowly yet surely making his name far and wide, performing on concert stages around the world and with some of the finest orchestras on the planet.

He rises at 5:45 each morning to practise and the interminable hours he has spent trying to perfect the art of playing the piano makes one wonder how much of a childhood Lisiecki has enjoyed. Yet, the young phenom who loves to ski gets nothing but joy from his art.

"You can look at it both ways,'' he conceded. "It is a lot of work, but the main part is I really love it. Every time I think it's a lot of work, I know it's lots of fun, I get to travel and perform and meet people.''

In January, Lisiecki graduates from Western Canada High School and writes his final diploma exam online. That's because, later that day, he will play a concert in Winnipeg.

In October, Lisiecki signed a contract for five CDs in the next five years with a German recording company. He'll start working on the first of those probably in the fall of 2011.

He's received a full scholarship to the Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, where he will study under Marc Durand beginning in September.

"Everyone has a different view of classical music,'' Lisiecki noted. "To me, music has so many different colours . . . so many different shades and infinite pos-sibilities.''

They didn't mention FT once; you should immediately ask for a correction.

Seriously though, well done, I can barely play the triangle.

Congratulations! You really deserve the E and SE statuses...... I believe you should read what Cpt Doug Morris wrote about you too!

Congrats.

From another ARCT (piano performance) graduate, I know how long the road has been. ^

Well, your post is a case of why you shouldn't jump to conclusions.

I started reading this:

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more frequent flyer than Jan Lisiecki.

"I don't count,'' laughed the 15-year-old concert pianist.
And thought to myself "sure you do. What good FT'er doesn't know exactly how many status miles they have"

and then I went on to read:

"I think the longest I spent at home this year was a week. I've flown 200,000 miles.''
And then a sigh of relief. :D

Well done being able to balance all the travelling with your piano work. On a kinda related note, over the holiday, I was on ted.com and watched the clip with Conductor Benjamin Zander's presentation on kids playing the piano and found it very cool - but then I have an 18 yr old son who has gone the Royal Conservatory piano route since 5 years old and know how tough it can be. Well done and let us out here in Vancouver when u are performing next please! Happy New Year.

I guess the Calgary Herald thinks that flying 200K is a lot. :p ;)

Good on ya jlisi984. May 2011 bring you continued success!

Question - is your recording contract with DG?

Seems like a good idea for a MiniDO in 2011. Can we coordinate with Jan when he might be in YYZ (or wherever), and arrange to gather as a group?

I'd happily give the ride to/from YYZ to our resident celebrity. Hopefully Jan and his entourage can fit in to my lowly C300. :D
