YYZ-HKG non-stop, when?
When is AC going non-stop for its YYZ-HKG route? I know they have recently cancelled this flight until the summer time, but are they ever going to make this flight a truly non-stop flight? Have they reached an agreement with their FAs yet? I know both CO and UA are going to start their non-stop service from NY-HKG in coming days (News here) soon, will that impose a new round of competition for AC? I remember watching a Chinese show few days ago here in YYZ saying how convenient this new CO (B777) flight will be with in-seat video in every Y seats. Personally, I'd prefer a stop for such a long flight but non-stop would be a nice option as well.

I don't think this will happen in the near future. With the traffic between Canada and HKG so low lately, AC is smart in just operating one flight picking up both passenger from the East and West Coast on 1 plane and then leave for HKG. I don't think there is enough traffic at the moment to justify operating 1 flight nonstop from YYZ and another one from YVR.
Btw, I think the guys over at the CO board are saying that the loadings on the EWR-HKG route are very low.

AC doesn't have the equipment to operate it yet. A -400 would be too severly weight restricted (I still don't see how UA is going to manage to make any money on JFK HKG).
The A340-500's are being bought for this purpose (but Airbus have to figure out how to shed about 6 tons of weight before their range projections will work.)

I had a friend who travelled on CX's "Polar One" flight in June 98, to celebrate with the opening of the new airport in HKG. The flight was a direct JFK-HKG test flight overflying North Pole, Siberia and then straight down to HKG.
He said loadings were around 30-40% less than usual since it's too heavy to fly with full load. He got 3 seats for himself and he was no CX FF

As to how highly they are valued, the housing allowance for a Chase V.P. (not that high a rank in a bank) is more than what many of us - even the bank's employees - are paid.

Don't I know it.
I still don't earn what the Government would have paid to rent my flat in Hong Kong at the top of the market in '94. (About 10K USD per month for an 850 sq. ft., 2 bedroom flat).

I work in one of those Wall St. firms in NYC. People who relocate to HK in my firm are entitled to 2 J Class RT HK-US tickets per year for leisure purposes (more if you are married and have kids). Think of all the $$$ CO & UA can generate from the corporate market, in addition to those "over the counter" tickets for urgent trips! Currently, only CX provides a high quality F/J HKG-NYC service.
For the economy class market, there is strong competition, as every airline in the Northern Hemisphere competes for NYC-HKG traffic (even Aeroflot.. JFK-SVO-HKG!
) , especially KAL, CAL and Asiana, they sell RT tickets for around USD$550 year-round. So with the decreased load factor UA & CO cannot depend on Y-class revenues on NYC-HKG direct routes.
Offtopic: In my firm the housing subsidy is HKD$20K per month, paid in $$$, for relocated entry-level positions, and that is in addition to their salary!
Too bad I can't relocate to HK

I know someone who works at the CX Commericial Sales office in Hong Kong, and according to him, a lot of those firms you mentioned get a stack of free "Full fare Y to J" upgrade coupons each year depending on sales volume.
