I came across the Roots Air ad in today's National Post (page D12) for their "Silver Class" service. It mentioned access to their "flagship lounge" in YYZ. I'm curious, is this the former CP Empress Lounge in T3?

It also mentioned that unlike Air Canada, Roots Air doesn't charge the NavCan fee. I was under the impression that this fee was mandatory, like a government tax.

This would be unlikely, as it was converted into a staff lounge for TSC.

Probably just a marketing ploy to show AC fare is even higher, since additional charges must be added, like NAVCAN. RootsAir would have to pay the fee, but has obviously included it in its fare structure. It is like stores that advertise" no PST or GST". They pay it to the government on your behalf, but it shows up on the receipt and is covered off by a reduction in the net price.

I thought that NAVCAN was a cost recoupment charge and not a tax per se, sort of like a fuel surcharge. I'm not sure all international carriers charge it and think it is discretionary. Could be wrong though.

I was out for dinner last night with a person who works for Sky Service (they will be operating Roots Air).

They indicated there will probably be lots of bumps and problems in the first couple of weeks and people will have to bear with them while they work out the wrinkles.

I don't want to start any rumours, but it will take a couple of months of operation before I will want to fly on them.
