I did EWR-YVR-NRT in Jan of this year. When you arrive from your transborder flight, just follow the signs for International Connections. This leads you to a special CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) desk where they do a quick passport check. There is no additional security check and you do not need to reclaim your luggage. You then go down the escalator into the International Departures area (airside).
1h35min should be enough given that at 7am EWR is not very busy so the flight usually leaves on time. And even if it does leave late, they can usually make up about 30min in the air (if you leave on time without delay, the flight usually arrives about a half hour early).
Hope this answers your questions.

The special international connection opens 9am-8pm local. Make sure you do *not* follow the rest of the passengers into the arrival hall.

You don't mention citizenship, so just FYI that entry requirements for Canada must still be met even with the international bypass line.
