Using multiple certs... on purpose

I have another flight from YYZ -> YVR -> ICN coming up. Since we have the SWU promo for domestic flights, it may make sense to use a SWU for the domestic leg and the SSWU for the international leg just in case the second upgrade does not clear at the gate. I am rolling in SWU certs so I am not too worried about burning an extra SWU.

Is this even possible or will they ask for a SSWU @ YYZ? They are two different flight numbers but on the same ticket number.

You can certainly try. Makes sense. Perhaps, if the ICN flight does clear, they can give you back your SWU?

When is your flight? Ideally, you should call at your upgrade window and see if you can confirm the business class seat on both segments. Since it's on the same ticket, if you can get confirmed business on both segments, then you probably only need one SSWU

....

I think :p

I hope another FTer can chime in on this

Yes, but if only the YYZ-YVR portion can be confirmed in advance, it would be a shame to burn an SSWU on that in case the transpac does not clear. So while the promo is in effect, I don't see why this would not work. In fact, you could use the SWU for the first leg, and if they mark "CERT PULLED YYZ" in your file, perhaps not even have to hand over the SSWU in YVR. Not that I'd suggest doing such a thing.... ;)

I've used a SWU cert during such a promo for the Canadian leg on the return portion of an international itinerary without any problems.

The flight is in a few weeks -- Sept 24th. Yes, if the international flight clears at the 4-day window, I should just use a SSWU.

Would be interesting to see if they ask for a SSWU for the second leg if I have used a SWU for the first leg. I'm sure they have thought of this loophole.

Now only if they would send the 75k SSWU's... it's been 6 weeks and counting!

The upgrade promo for North America ends on Sept 6. (It's a summer thing.) Better be prepared to cough up the SSWU if you are flying on T+ and want to upgrade YYZ-YVR. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
