Can someone help with the reasoning behind the change?

Arriving in HKG at 17:20 means you've missed the work day and therefore have a very long night to recover before working the next day. I would have thought this would impact paid J sales; (as a company) why would I pay a huge premium for someone to arrive rested...so that they can promptly go back to bed?

perhaps it's AC trying to avoid idling the aircraft?

My guesses are that the current schedule doesn't allow for the greatest connections on the outbound. I'm flying on the 24th and I have a six (!!!) hour layover from PDX. Secondly, the plane idles in HKG for more than eleven hours. At first I thought maybe the plane then operated to YYZ but that's a 77L and not a 77W, which is used YVR-HKG.

the 777 and the 340 before them always sat a long time in HKG. AC does do contract maintenance on them however.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9700/5.0.0.743 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/107)

Pity, the new schedule with the redeye only started in March and it was really quite convenient. Hopefully it'll be back in the new year.

The early morning arrival at HKG is great. I can board the plane after work and arrive the next morning, saving many hours and fly while sleeping. Now, with the change is schedule, I would stick with AC15 and fly non-stop from YYZ.

its just for 5 weeks and I suspect the mail reason is to REDUCE capacity.

Actually contract maintenance for the 777's was recently awarded to Air France Industries/KLM Engineering & Maintenance. Not sure when it takes effect.

I don't see how changing the departure times reduces capacity?

They also changed it from daily to twice a week (each direction) I believe.
