Tanzania visa on arrival...

Anyone recently been through Tanzania and got a visa on arrival? A post from 2007 suggests you can do it paying $50 on arrival... but is this up to date?

Flying into ZNZ next week!

Yes you can get one on arrival, but make sure you have the money in US$ cash - they won't accept other currencies or plastic.

Excellent - I've still got $100 from my last US travels so that'll do nicely ^

Interesting that the visa fee is only for nationals of "developed countries" like the UK , US, Australia, Japan and Canada. Also for non-Commonwealth countries like the Czech Republic.

However, the visa is free for smaller Commonwealth countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Jamaica, Bahamas.

It's not a visa, just a normal immigration entry stamp that you get. I believe it's all based on reciprocity. The same applies to some other East African states such as Kenya and Uganda.

Yep, its all based on reciprocity. The british make the tanzanians get a visa and they have to pay for it so the tanzanians make the british pay for the visa as well but the british have it slightly better as we can get it on arrival but tanzanians have to have a visa issued by the British High Commission prior to travel.

for the British, it is a full page visa issued on arrival in Tanzania not a stamp!

Another example is that Americans have to have Visas for brazil because Brazilians have to have visa for America but Brazilians do not need a visa for UK so UK nationals do not need visa for brazil!

Which reminds me - I see that Kenya 'on arrival' visas must be paid for cash in USD ONLY now.

And if you're not at the pointy end, be prepared for a wait in the poorly air conditioned (if at all) arrivals hall. There seems to be little priority or order of processing based on my experience last December.

I'm arriving on a short hop from Nairobi, so will be on a small plane where none of it's very pointy! I'll try to get myself as far forward as possible though (without resorting to running!)

From Timatic for Irish citizens:

Passport required.
- Passport and/or passport replacing documents must be valid
at least 6 months after the date of arrival.

Visa required.

Visa Issuance:
- On arrival: if required, a Visitor's Pass is issued to
nationals of Ireland (Republic of).

Additional Information:

- Visitors must hold return/onward tickets and all documents

required for their next destination.

Warning:
- Non-compliance with visa requirements will result in
deportation of passenger on same flight.

Appears that Irish passport holders are exempt from the $50 fee, many UK citizens are also entitled to Irish citizenship, so if you plan on making a few trips then it might be worthwhile finding out if you're eligible. Normal requirement is an Irish born (North or South) parent or grandparent.

Unless it's tremendously inconvenient for you to do so I would recommend getting a visa before you go as getting one on arrival is a miserable ordeal.

I also arrived in Dar on a short hop from Nairobi and I can assure you that being first off the plane won't help. I spent a very frustrating 90 minutes or so standing around in a hot uncomfortable arrivals hall with no seating or refreshments available wondering why those who gave in their passports last were getting their visas first.

Just saw you're arriving in ZNZ not DAR...

Unfortunately that could be even worse because ZNZ airport is even smaller and you might be unfortunate enough to arrive after a big charter flight from Europe gets in. Last time I was at ZNZ I saw hundreds of Italians getting off a Livingston flight queuing for hours!

Still available?

Anyone knows if this is still available for USD 50? I can't find any info on this on their embassy website.
