Travelling to Lesotho for business ... is it safe?

I might need to go to Lesotho on a business trip next year; exact date and location not yet specified. I have been several times in South Africa, but never to Lesotho. The client made it clear that it would be my own decision as if I decided not to travel there, nobody would (that's ok for the client).

Is it safe to travel to Lesotho? How do you get there? Where to stay?
Any information would be helpful for me.

Thanks a lot!

Lesotho is quite safe. Safer than South Africa in my opinion. I assume you would be going to Maseru. You can get South African Airways flights (3x per day) from JNB to Maseru, although they are on some pretty small planes (J41's). Other alternative is to fly to Bloemfontein (via JNB) and rent a car to drive to Maseru (about 1 1/2 hours on a paved fairly straight highway.
You should have no worries going there.

I have never been to Lesotho but as it's on our doorstep I think I would be aware of a very dodgy safety situation - and I'm not. Our company has a subsidiary there and my colleagues visit regularly and there's never a mention of it being unsafe. Or less safe than South Africa as dg4255 points out.

I'm very curious to know why your client has such a dire perception of the situation and on what basis other consultants have refused to go there.

You poor thing! Been to Lesotho a number of times on business. SAA/Airlink use to run daily flight on a small aircraft in the morning from JHB and back in the evening and it is fine. Not much of a choice on hotels but if I am forced to choose go for the Lesotho Sun Hotel. The Maseru Sun Casino is dreadful. The hotel will pick you up in a minibus and the drivers are very helpful and will look after you. Have travelled their on my own as a woman and it is fine. Just be sensible and don't get adventurous. Remember to have cash ready for the king's airport tax on your departure, they do not take credit cards. There is no ATM at the airport and if you can't pay you will have to go back to Maseru (30mins there and 30 mins back) and you will miss your flight.
