Dining in Kampala
I will be in Kampala for work next week, and am looking for dining options. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will be staying at the Sheraton Hotel.

For informal dining (pub food, pizzas, etc.) the Speke Hotel is quite OK. I have not eaten in the Kampala Serena, but most Serena's have excellent food and I have had good experiences with the Serena in Kigali. Hopefully someone else can give you some more adventurous choices. Cheers, T. |
Here is a good post on chowhound:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/338331 It's been over a year since I moved from Kampala but for traditional Ugandan food (particularly Luwombo and chicken stew) I like St Anthony's near downtown. For me the best food in Kampala is the pork joints, I favored Zanzi's in Ntinda but everyone seems to have a different opinion. For the most part, they're all good. Emin Pasha is definitely good as is the Serena (I had a Christmas Eve dinner at the Serena that was as good as I've had anywhere). The food court at Garden City is actually pretty good and I really liked the Shewarmas at the lebanese place against the back wall. The come with this garlicky cream sauce that is worth the price alone. |
thanks Carl & Thalassa.
Carl - I like chow hound. Will use that. |
Ekitobero
... for local food. Order the mixed plate with groundnut sauce and the banana juice.
It's a short car ride from the Sheraton - take a car so that you know how to get there. Then, it's about a 15-20 minute walk back to the Sheraton. There is also Fang Fang, the local Chinese restaurant - again a short 10-15 minute walk from the Sheraton. Food at the Sheraton is overpriced and uninteresting. |
In Kampala. Yesterday lunch, we were taken to an Indian Members Club called Open House on Buganda Road (abt 5 minutes from the Sheraton). Went with one of the owners. Great food. Unfortunatley we are stuck with a work do tonight at the hotel:td:

In any case, make sure you have some matoke (boiled and mashed green banana) with groundnut sauce and ugali (maize porrige that reminds me of grits). Cheers, T. |
And try a rolex...
... sold at roadside stands. It's a wrap with veggies. Rolex, get it? ;)

I stayed at the Serena and liked the food there. The buffet has a great representation of Ugandan food as well as other things. They have a pretty good Italian resturant too. They make a really yummy cappucino . I was not impressed with the Emin Pasha--the place was quite pretty and the food OK but for the price, I thoought it should be really good. Indian food is good in Kampapla--we wnt to an Indian restaranty ( can't remember--started with a P???) that was very good and quite popular.

My goodness I'm late jumping in here, but for future readers, I'd hate anyone to think they could do a proper food tour of Kampala without eating at Khana Khazana, quite simply one of my favourite restaurants in the entire world! It's an incredible Indian place, and while the prices are pretty high compared to local Ugandan joints, it's still an absolute steal for visitors. It's located on Acacia Avenue in Kololo, and every single special (taxi) and boda-boda driver will know how to get you there. Sam's (I'm pretty sure on Kampala road) has awesome steaks, too.
