Mauritius: Weather & Oberoi

Hello,

I'm in the planning stages of my honeymoon - considering Mauritius.. I've heard very good things about the Oberoi - I'm looking for a luxurious, romantic setting with excellent food and service. Do you have any other hotel recommendations that I should consider?

A bit hesitant about the Southern Hemisphere in the July 05 though. How is the climate there at this time of year?

Thanks in advance!

I was in Mauritius in June, 2003. The weather was glorious. The only time I remember being uncomfortable was one night after dark, when the wind was quite strong off the ocean and it was surprisingly chilly. The band wasn't good enough to keep me outside.

I had a very nice stay at the Hilton. Of course the Oberoi has a much more luxurious reputation!

I have been several times to Mauritius and in my opinion October and November are the best months...Dry, warm and sunny! July can be quite cool and you can expect some rain too. I would avoid July.

The Oberoi looks great but the location on the west coast is not very nice and the beach is quite rocky!!! Have you ever thought of "Le Prince Maurice"?

Can't comment on the Oberoi but the weather should be fine as others have said. The island is literally in the middle of nowhere and so storms blow through usually pretty quickly anyway even if you get them. No mountains to keep the storms around so they do their business and move on. The exception is up in Curepipe where it's cold and drizzly most or all of the year. Unless you have a reason to go to Curepipe, I doubt you will go to Curepipe so I wouldnt worry about it.

July is in the "winter" season in Mauritius. Since the hotel is on the North West part of the island you will benefit from the sun set. You may be unlucky to have some rain but since it is not during the cyclonic period ( end of december to march) there is nothing to fear. The water temp should be around 19 to 22 celsius. Have not stayed at the Oberoi ( relatives have a bungalow near pte aux cannoniers in the north) but it is along a bay.

Enjoy your stay and don't forget to visit the Market in Port-Louis ( bus ride or taxi)

I was in Mauritius in September for my honeymoon. I stayed at Le Prince Maurice, and thought it was fine. It wasn't my favorite hotel ever, but it was pretty, and the staff was generally friendly and competent.

We enjoyed the first part of the trip, a safari in Botswana, more than the Mauritius portion. We did hook up with a really good tour company in Mauritius though. The company that booked our safari arranged the Mauritius portion through a local operator. We wound up spending a day on a catamaran, and a day being driven around the island. Both were lots of fun.

As mentioned previously, july is winter season in MRU, so be aware of that. You can find a climate table at the website www.info-mauritius.com, and some other useful information as well.

Concerning accomodation, for the same price of a room at Prince Maurice or Oberoi, you can get a 163m2 suite (the smallest available category) at the brand new Taj Exotica Resort. Every suite has its own private swimming pool. The resort is situated on the west coast, according to insiders the best side of the island (just think of the sunset view!)

So thats why I dismissed all other alternatives and I'm going there for 2 weeks in february. I'll let you know how it was, and will also publish some pictures on my website.

Enjoy planning you trip!

hi intelmovies,

the Taj was really very nice - there was nothing to complain about, except maybe a bit of scarce vegetation here and there - which is understandable as it is so new.

Actually, i put up a review including pictures on Tripadvisor (www.tripadvisor.com) - if you've got any more questions after that, feel free to contact me again anytime!

best regards from austria,
