Purchasing tickets

My son is studying abroad and I will like to know if it's cheaper to purchase his ticket here in the U.S. to come for holidays.

nikealli,

You may need to give a little more info than that. Also are you sure you are in the right forum? Would this not be a travelbuzz type question? Travelbuzz gets a lot more people looking than the Africa board.

But I'm guessing the answer will depend on a number of factors - where your son is, what airlines fly there, how much competition there is in the home market, what airlines he prefers to fly. Often, discounted fares are only available to the home market, but not always, and there may also be special offers. On the other hand, if he is at school in a country with a lot of US students, it may be harder to get cheaper tickets, unless he can play around with his dates a little - I used to work regularly in Hong Kong, and we knew to avoid end of school and university terms, as all the cheap tickets would be booked months in advance by students flying back to HK from the UK.

May I infer from your choice of forum that your son is studying in Africa?

As a rule of thumb, tickets between a first world and a third world country will usually be cheapest in the latter country, simply because they are priced according to what the market can afford. There are lots of exceptions, of course.
