Money in Namibia
Greetings all
Just seeking advice on money in Namibia. I'm off to Windhoek in a week, and am unable to get NAD at home in Australia. So trying to figure out the best course of action so that I can grab a taxi from Hosea Kutako International Airport to my hotel in the city (advice seems to be to have some cash on hand for this). Google suggests that Rand is accepted there, so just wondering how widespread the acceptance of Rand is in Windhoek? I have some leftover from a previous trip to South Africa, but don't want to get stuck in a taxi who won't take Rand. Is it accepted pretty much everywhere, or will I actually need to exchange some money for NAD or find a Namibian ATM on arrival? Fully intend to use my card for everything possible, but sometimes cash is needed! Thanks heaps! |
Several recent trips reports in AFF about trips to Namibia by Australians.

No issue using Rand. South Africans represent something like 40% of all arrivals in the country!

There are two ATMs directly ahead of you when you come out into the arrivals area. I believe the one on the right issues Rand and the other NAD. as said either will be acceptable for the taxi driver which you can book from the official taxi office in the middle if the arrivals area.

In my experience everyone takes ZAR; gives NAD in change. Bear in mind one currency is less useful than the other.

No issues with ZAR.
Honestly, we took in 3000 ZAR for 2 weeks in cash this year, at the end still had 1000+ ZAR left. Almost everywhere takes (if not prefers) card |
