Mozambique new e-visa: step by step guide
 

The new e-visa system is up and running, and after a few teething issues, it is now working well!

I have used it three times in the past six months and it's excellent. Twice for a dual entry 30 day "Border Visa" (basically a tourist visa) and one for a multi-entry 30 day business visa. Note that the Border Visa is basically the same thing as the Tourist Visa but cheaper (at only USD50) and limited to dual entry. Also note Border visa cannot be extended once in-country. Evidence requirements are the same. On the tourist visa, you can select 30, 60 or 90 day multi-entry tourist visas via the e-visa platform for 6252, 12504 and 18756 Meticais respectively ($100, $200 and $300).

Process:

You need to get a bunch of document scans / copies ready in advance, then the process takes about 15 mins. See below for the stuff to get ready before you get started.

As part of the process you will need to upload the documents below. All uploaded photos must be scanned, clear, legible and in one of supported formats : JPEG or PNG for the passport photo and JPEG, PNG or PDF for everything else. The size of each individual file must not exceed 2MB:

Recent Passport size Photograph
Copy of the passport (validity superior of 6 months)
Food and Accommodation Proof / Proof of existence of means of subsistence (just cook up an online hotel booking and an online banking statement less than 3 months old with at least EUR2000 or USD2000 or equivalent in it. There is no guidance on how much per day you need to show evidence of, but I have been approved with evidence equating to about EUR50 per day of stay)
Round trip ticket.

1. Go to https://evisa.gov.mz/
2. Click the green 'Login or register' button at the bottom
3. Click 'If you do not have an account please click here'
4. Choose a Username, Password, email, account type as Individual and enter the Captcha
5. Once logged in, click 'Create e-visa'
6. Select Type as 'Border', No. of entries 'Double' and Duration of Stay as '30 Days' (or whatever you are going for!)
7. Click 'I confirm that I have checked Visa waiver Countries list and have informed myself if I need Visa to enter Mozambique.'
8. Visa Data: Most of this is self explanatory. Purpose of travel is tourism. Where would you like to receive the visa? Border. Issuance Location: Aeroporto Mavalane (first choice - this is Maputo airport and very silly they don't label it as this).
9. Demographic Data: Most of this is self explanatory. Note that the Postal Code field only works with 4+ numbers, no letters. I just added '0000' to get it to go through, then added the real postal code in the Street and house number section. For passport type I think you put P for Personal (as opposed to diplomatic).
10. Biometrics: Upload a passport picture. All uploaded photos must be scanned, clear, legible and in one of supported formats : JPEG or PNG. The size of the file must not exceed 2MB.
11. Documents: When you upload the food and accommodation proof, it weirdly asks for Document Number and Issuing Authority. Does the same weird thing with proof of means of subsistence. I added my bank account number as the document number (just give them a number they can see in the pdf) and for issuing authority I put my bank. Same for the round trip ticket, I put the Ticket Number as the Document Number and airline as the Issuing authority.
12. Click Submit after reviewing the summary, and you should get a visa within 5 working days! Mine has always been quicker than this.

Any sense as to whether any airport official outside Mozambique could deny boarding without a visa? From what I can tell on Timatic - seems one can still get a visa on arrival right? (US PPT). I'm doing a last minute trip and 5 working days won't cut it.

this is brilliant and very timely post. We are about to apply for our e- visas. How far in advance can you apply? We are travelling end of May. What happens if you get a visa denied for any reason. Can you reapply? I am trying to decide whether to pay the agency or do it myself.

We’re traveling in late May. I tried to do this slightly more than 2 months out in mid-March and the visa, while approved quickly, was only valid for 2 months. Strange since the process explicitly asks for your travel dates and provides no warning on the limits of validity.

Yes, airports get very confused about this. I had to argue in London about this when going with Ethiopian. Visitors will likely face even more confusion over the coming weeks from airport ground staff as the goal posts have moved AGAIN. A bit like an ESTA for USA!)

Not sure about how far in advance. Worth interrogating the smallprint on the website to see. Yes, you can reapply if rejected. I have multiple friends who did this and got their e-via eventually! My evisa experience
 

I recently travelled to Quelimane in Mozambique on business. I had work in Namibia, Madagascar, and Mozambique so I bought a round trip ticket to JNB from the USA and used JNB as a hub. Used Airlink for Namibia and Madagascar and LAM for Mozambique. All airlines were fine, but weather caused me to miss the connection to Quelimane from Maputo. LAM was superb, they drove us to a 5 star hotel and put us up for the night, comped meals, drove us back to the airport in the morning.
The evisa web site didn’t work for me. Tried uploading docs numerous times, it kept saying the application was incomplete. Reached out to the help line, no joy. It was a non issue, on arrival to Maputo I had the incomplete webpage printed but all they wanted to see was a reservation for my hotel, I think they wanted to see that it had been prepaid but I hadn’t and they didn’t care. A business visa cost $10 USD. They put a slip of paper (the visa) into my passport which I managed to lose, at Quelimane the borders guys asked for it, even though it was an internal flight. But I just said I lost it and they waved me though.

bought Malarone for Malaria in the airport pharmacy at JNB, $28 USD, no prescription needed, highly recommend for Mozambique.

Hi - thanks very much for your advice - I was stumped by the invalid post code and would never have thought of entering 4 random numbers!

Trying to do an eVisa but the 2nd field asks for "Passport Type" and the options are P, PA, PB ....... PZ, P0 ...... P9. I've never seen that before and wouldn't have a clue what to select. The FAQ has no information either!

Do I select Px where X = the first letter of my passport number?

i am also travelling to mozambique via connecting from maputo i got evisa so i was asking do they provide the visa sticker on the airport of quelimane or do i have to get it from maputo ??because i am confused first time travelling through the e-visa and confused bcause the quelimane is small airport so do they have the stickers for it ??

What passport are you travelling on Sakil? Because Mozambique has also introduced a visa-waiver for many nationalities now. Just show up and pay 650 meticais!

Mozambique Visa Waiver

Just show up maybe too much of a shortcut. On my last trip, I was asked to show the required docs (trip purpose, return ticket and hotel reservation) before I was allowed to board my flight to MPM, even if I didn't have to show anything upon arrival, at the VOA desk. On the other hand, ET didn't check any docs at boarding in ADD so YMMV.

VOA fees can also be paid in cash, 10 EUR or 10 USD currently.

What is the current situation regarding e-Visas and VOA?

If I understand everything correctly the VOA is roughly 1/10 the price of an e-Visa (6250 MT vs. 650 MT) and requires seemingly less documentation - any reason not to choose the VOA option? We'll be flying in to VNX from JNB on German passports

The list of visa waiver countries has been updated since April 2023. The most up to date list is here - https://evisa.gov.mz/waiver

Unsurprisingly the list of countries are mostly African with a smattering of Portuguese-speaking countries as well.

I'll apply for my eVisa later on and post back on results.

OK - just tried registering.

1) I went to https://evisa.gov.mz and selected Tourist Visa. (Other options = Business, Investment, Crew (airline), Humanitarian, Sports or Culture)
2) I created an account. Account types are either Oil & Gas or Personal.
3) Within 3 min I received the email to activate my account. The email is bilingual English / Portuguese.
4) Once I verified my account, I logged in and started filling things out.
5) As mentioned up-thread, passport type is P or PA, PB, PC, PD ... PZ, P0, P1, P2, ... P9. There is no explanation of what the difference is, but as advised up-thread I simply chose type P.
6) Passport Type is Diplomatic, Service, or Normal. (I wonder what a "Service" passport is?)
7) Visa type was defaulted to Tourist with Multiple Entries. You can select 30d, 60d, or 90d.
8) Docs requested are:

Recent Passport size Photograph
Passport copy, not less than 6 months validity
Proof of financial means
Proof of paid hotel reservation
Return ticket

The form notes that the fee = 650 Meticals = $14 CAD, €9, $10 USD at current exchange rates.

10) A pop-up window asks "Dear passenger, please confirm that you have informed yourself if you need Visa, by clicking on the checkbox below, before proceeding with your Visa application.". You need to click yes to proceed.
11) Enter passport details, purpose of trip, date of entry, etc.
12) Where would you like to receive the visa? Answer - Border (It's the only choice)
13) Issuance Location - a long list ensues. Again, as advised up-thread I choose Aeroporto Mavalane. This is very non-obvious!
14) Now enter personal details - name, address, etc. DOB format = DD/MM/YYYY
15) For postal code, I entered 0000 then put details in the (one-line) address field. No punctuation allowed in this field so I just used spaces. The line isn't very long so you might run out of space.
16) You need to enter address of the hotel include province and district which I didn't know. Google is my friend. I supposed I could have just chosen one at random.
17) Enter email & phone # of hotel
18) Answer questions - have you ever been denied a visa etc.
19) Proof of Financial Means is an odd one. I took a screenshot of my bank account (probably should have waited for payday so it looks like I have more $$$!) then erased the account numbers.
20) Clicked submit and I got a green "REQUEST CREATED SUCCESSFULLY" along with "YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL RESPONSE WITHIN 5 WORKING DAYS"

So now I wait and see what happens.

Overall the process is adequately painless. The original post from ozymandias24 is instrumental in understanding how to fill this thing out. But aside from needing to figure out which district my hotel is in, it really wasn't a big deal.

Well I never received any email response. So this morning I logged in to the site and saw that my application has a status of "READY FOR ISSUANCE". Under "Action" there's a little download icon which I clicked. Sure enough "Announcement.pdf" appeared in my downloads folder and it's the visa with a giant QR code, the pic I submitted, and other details.

BUT ...

It notes "Applicant must pay the fee on site / O pedido deve ser pago na fronteira." Fair enough - there are no charges on my AMEX so this definitely not prepaid. The big thing though is that validity is 29/09/2025 (day after I applied - again, fair enough) and the valid until is 28/11/2025. i.e 30d validity.

So this particular visa is useless to me since I'm only going in December.

Evidently I'll need to apply again and choose a longer validity / apply a little closer to when I'm actually going.

Update - last night (28 Nov) I filled out the form again.

This morning I received an email with the visa attached as pdf. Oddly enough, my "30-day" visa is valid from 29/11/2025 to 28/01/2026

Once again, it notes "Applicant must pay the fee on site / O pedido deve ser pago na fronteira.".

So looks like I'm all set! Will give a final report back post trip.

Quick wrap up - when I arrived at Aeroporto Mavalane, I saw several people queuing at a counter where you paid for the visa. I handed over my printed copy of the pdf and the guy asked for my credit card. I had reserved using the AMEX so that's the card I handed over, only to be told "no". OK ... no AMEX I guess so I gave my Visa card instead. (I was to find throughout Mozambique that AMEX is not accepted anywhere.)

Anyhow, the fee was exactly as advertised. Once charged, I was given an impressive-looking official receipt and another printout of my pdf; seems my printout wasn't sufficient - they need to print it out even though it's the same thing.

With receipt and printout in hand, I was able to then queue for immigration where passports were being stamped with great enthusiasm by both male and female officers. I wonder if they get repetitive stress injuries from the amount of force they put into their stamping. In any case, it was amusing to see and hear such vigour going into passport stamping.

Formalities over (less than 10 min) I was able to claim my luggage and then head out into Maputo.
