Virgin to relaunch London-Joburg in mid-September

"Virgin Atlantic plans to relaunch its London Heathrow-Johannesburg route on September 15. Head of Middle East, Africa and India of Virgin Atlantic Airways, Liezl Gericke, says the relaunch of the Johannesburg route is tied to acquiring the relevant approvals for the flights. She says the airline will continue to lobby government to reopen borders. “Our intention is to gradually reintroduce flights. We ... plan to initially introduce passenger services three times a week with the same overnight schedule that we operated prior to lockdown. We then want to slowly ramp this back up to a daily schedule, subject to demand."

Huge losses for SA’s tourism sector since lockdown

"South Africa’s tourism industry has lost more than R68bn (€3.4 bn) in tourism spend since the national lockdown began at the end of March, according to a statement from the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA).Tourism in South Africa supports 1.5m jobs and contributes 8.6% to the GDP. This underpins the urgent need ... for inbound tourism to open by September and to open domestic tourism even sooner. "

For sure, but South Africa is unfortunately one of the countries where many of those who should be listening will only do so if some of that money finds its way into their pockets.

Seems like yet another u-turn by the government, "Holidays still banned: South Africans only allowed to take day trips"

"The ban on smoking during South Africa's lockdown has earned criminal syndicates at least R6 billion so far, estimates Johann van Loggerenberg, author of Tobacco Wars."

And how much has the government lost in excise tax revenue?

In a competition for the silliest C-19 regulation, banning tobacco sales should be a winner.

"New rules include that restaurants and casinos must make guests fill out self-assessment forms."

What?!? Who the heck makes up this kind of crap?

I have no doubt that once they have collected the first 10 million forms, C-19 will vanish from South Africa overnight.

"BATSA, in its submission, estimates the fiscus lost out on roughly R2.4 billion in excise taxes during the first eight weeks of lockdown."

The real question is how much of said R6bn have found itself to the pockets of who...

It gets better...
Level 3: You can visit friends and family at casinos, restaurants - but not at home

Once the safety protocols are issued, you will also be allowed to be visit friends and family at cinemas, restaurants or casinos, but they will not legally be allowed to come to your house, or you to theirs.
With these regulations not allowing people to visit their loved ones at their homes, it will force those, who want to abide by the regulations, to visit casinos, restaurants or cinemas to see friends and family.
This, in turn, will increase the number of people visiting these outlets, which may be good for business, but surely not for the stated objective of curbing the spread of the virus?
Surely once you filled up the form C-19 must wait at the entrance until you go back out...

It is really really sad that a bunch of people who all appear have their own separate interests in several matters sit around a table and all throw regulations into the ring which serve those interests but not the health and / or wellbeing of the population. Those regulations then get combined into the 'new regulations' without anyone questioning the reason or benefit of them. And that's how you can meet your friends in a restaurant and not at home. As someone once said: "a camel is a horse designed by a committee". But at least a camel has purpose in the desert.
That wonderful country surely deserves better than this!

I agree with thijsseh. From the outset, my reading here and elsewhere on the web has had me wondering WHAT some people there are thinking. If there was a global competition for strange, seemingly illogical and/or irrelevant regulations, SA would seem to be a clear winner.

In our optimistic exploration of future holiday destinations, in pursuit of our world-wide travel hobby, I do a lot of research into various Nations' evolving regulations. In our case, we have almost zero optimism that our pre-booked trip to the WC is December will be viable. South Africans have my genuine sympathy for the way C-19 is being 'managed' down there.

What small bit of optimism I have for my Dec/Jan trip is waning by the day. I think the trip may, in some form or other, be technically possible. Whether it is viable in practice depends on the level of micromanagement being practised at the time.

I still remain optimistic for my now-rescheduled June 2021 trip. Back in March, I was cautiously optimistic for August 2020 but that quickly faded even by April 1 when I had to pay the balance of my trip or forfeit the entire 1/3 deposit. No cancel for any reason coverage. Got a refund on the trip and then immediately rebooked with the same tour company for June 2021. This time I'll have CFAR coverage, but that still is only 75% plus the cost of the CFAR policy which is usually 50% more than standard coverage-- if the carrier offers it.

After the latest shenanigans, any optimism I had for my mid-Nov Eswatini and KNP trip has been blown out of the water.
