Air zimbabwe...are they still flying?!...

I booked 4 one-way VFA-HRE tix on Air Zimbabwe's website < 24h ago. Submitted payment and everything. Other than the screen at the end which says you have submitted payment and etc, I noticed that I haven't got the confirmation email for the booking.

I decided to lookup on my PNR on Air Zimbabwe's website and the status shows "RESERVATION EXPIRED OR CANCELLED"???

Wondering what the heck, I googled Air Zimbabwe. One website indicated "Unfortunately, in October 2019, the airline's last remaining aircraft was impounded at OR Tambo International Airport due to the non-payment of debt. This means the airline's flights have been temporarilysuspended."

Tell me that's not true?!

Someone I knew used to work for them. I understood they ceased operations back around 2012.

What site did you use?

https://www.airzimbabwe.aero/

After I booked the flight but before I submitted payment. That is why it says RESERVATION NOT ISSUED.

After I submitted payment:

No confirmation emails. I thought maybe slow email servers. 12 hours later, still nothing. Already a pending charge on my CC.

I looked up the PNR about 12 hours after booking on the website and it says "reservation expired..."

When I was in Zim in August 2019 they were still flying, however fastjet had suspended their ops- to the best of my knowledge that suspension is still in place? Which would leave no domestic flights at all within Zim?

Fastjet seems to be the preferred airline now. They are operating local routes - in December I did a return Harare - Bulawayo trip. They have partnered with a another operator (I cannot think of the name now), on the Bulawayo - Harare return leg, they used Federal Airlines. ( I found the inflight magazine).
Fastjet also runs a few daily flights to JNB, and even though they have the odd delays, at least they are better than Air Zim where delays can last several hours. When I was in Harare, the ATC went on a go slow due to the work load... so that caused several delays and cancellations. Poor things could not handle the few flights that arrive and depart daily....

Both Air Zim and Fastjet are still flying.

Air Zim has 1 plane operational right now (the 767-200) while Fastjet has a handful of ERJ-145s.

While neither is a certainty to run on a specific date or time, your odds are much longer if you choose Air Zim.

They were operational yesterday.

However they only have 1 operational plane Z-WPF, a 767 which operates all flights. I saw it in Joburg earlier in the month. You would need plenty of contingency to rely on that.

Fastjet are also still going with a couple of aircraft leased from Solenta Aviation. Their reliability is ahead of Air Zim, but not by much.
