Looking closer at this, what is the likelihood of getting into the Protea Transit hotel? I have baggage to check and getting there Thursday 12 hours before departure would I be able to go through to the airside at that time?

Just to close the door on this, I want to thank all who contributed advice, all useful.
In the end I stayed in the adjacent City Lodge, surprisingly nice (I stayed in a few not so nice ones this trip), and excellent value at 750 Rand for the day (9-5).
