JNB Int'l Transit/Check-thru or claim+recheck?

Hi-
I have travelled via JNB 100s of times but always with an int'l to domestic connection or v.versa.

Next week I will be travelling LHR-JNB-MUB (Maun, Botswana) with 3 hrs connection time between the international flights. The LHR-JNB segment is on VS and the JNB-MUB is on SA.

I know how bad the immigration lines can be at 6/7am at JNB. I've missed many an onward flight after getting stuck. This time, there's enough time to clear immigration and recheck bags but I'm wondering if it's necessary.

Would VS interline a bag from London all the way through to Botswana on SA and, more importantly, would it be wise to do this given the occasional issues with theft at JNB and the risk of delayed luggage at the beginning of a safari?

If anyone has done this before and could offer advice on the safest way to make sure that the bags get from Point A via point B and arrive at Point C, that would be great.

thanks

If you want to minimize your chances of having your luggage delayed etc, the best would be to pick it up yourself in JNB and re-check it with SA.
