I will be REALLY interested to see the final cost breakdown after the event. :D

Do please report back, for the benefit of the community. Indeed, a Trip Report would be worth reading!

Will do. It won't be until way later this year, and then there's the matter of convincing my friends to take 3 weeks off work.....

I think my cost estimate will be fairly accurate, although we may splurge and go on the accommodated (i.e. hotels) tour instead of the camping one, so that will add $400 to my estimate.

The last trip I went on, I was fairly accurate with my pre-trip cost estimate. 20 days in SE Asia worked out to about $2200/person when I had estimated $2500/person.

The $500 is just for Cape Town hotels; 2 people/room, so essentially $1000/4 nights/room.

In general, I hate dealing with Airbnb because I feel like as the owner of the property has more leverage than the renter (e.g. being able to cancel last minute and causing the renter to scramble to find a place, which has happened before) and hotels are just easier to book/cancel/etc.. I'll look into it though to see if the discount is worth the possible hassle.

If a host cancel your rental, they need to pay a fee to Airbnb, so I don't think it is that common.
For a party of 4 people or more you will probably find it is much cheaper than hotels, but you will also not have any issues finding decent hotels for 250$ per room per night ^

So, a quick update. I don't think my friends can take 3 weeks off work, so I've been amending the itinerary tirelessly, trying to get something that works. And the more and more research I do, the more things I want to do. I'm limited to 2 weeks total, so I figure 12 days "on the ground." Thus, I've came up with two ideas with shorter distance to cover:

1. Victoria Falls to Chobe NP to Okavango Delta
2. Masai Mara National Reserve to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

For the first, I would really like to check out Namib-Naukluft NP, but I don't think I'd be able to make it out there with any sufficient time left; maybe in the future when I can do a Cape Town/Namibia trip. Any thoughts?

Have you considered doing some of this trip before or after your friends "join you"?

Sossusvlei was incredibly stunning, but unless you are chartering a flight, it is a 3 day minimum investment in time from Windhoek.

As in going a week early or continuing on for another week after they've returned home? Yup. First though, I need to see where they want to go, then I can add on accordingly.

So, for example, if we did the Lake Victoria/Chobe NP/Okavango Delta route, I would consider staying another week to get out to Namib-Naukluft NP. It just all depends on cost; I have plenty of time-off (so much so that I'm getting notices from the higher ups to spend my PTO).
