I was there last August and did not run into any machine fees. But if your card is Visa branded, they will charge a percentage for foreign exchange.

Thanks for the update. Did they have a reasonable number of them? Sounds like Petrol Stations are cash only (or a special card)

I guess "fun" is defined very differently for different folks so it is difficult to suggest activities. I always recommend the National Botanic Gardens at Kirstenbosch which also offer great views and are beautiful, expansive and interesting.

But tbh at my stage of life my idea of a blissful visit would be to stay in the winelands and do walks and eat in fabulous restaurants in gorgeous settings. Drive to neighbouring towns over scenic mountain passes and enjoy the glorious setting.

Do day trips into Cape Town if you like (say to visit Robben Island or the museums) rather than the other way around.

Wine is definitely in the agenda ;) And I appreciate the local perspective- not all about the tourist stuff :o although I'm sure I'll stick out :p

Good news on the ATM fees front, thanks.

Foreign exchange fees are down to the bank the card is issued by, not Visa, Mastercard etc.

I have an account with no overseas load or ATM fee.

We didn't have any trouble, but we only got cash in CPT and Port Elizabeth. That sounds right on the gas, though I can't remember for sure. Have a great trip!

ATMs are pretty ubiquitous in ZA. You shouldn't have trouble finding one in any town bigger than a few blocks.

Petrol stations used to be cash or "garage card" only but that has changed and now many of them accept credit cards too. Just ask before you fill your tank to be sure.

Another question:

I'm about to arrange Emirates Chauffeur Drive service to get me back to the airport for my return flight. Google Maps shows it as 25km (15 miles) and approx 25 minutes from Camps Bay where I'm staying. What extra if any should I allow for traffic if I have a scheduled departure time of 18:00 on a Saturday?

Barring something totally unusual, traffic should be very light late on a Saturday afternoon and the travelling time pretty much as suggested. So just leave half an hour before you would like to arrive at the airport.
