Probably the safest capital in subsaharian Africa.
Easy to navigate either walking or driving.
Not great food on offering, though you can find some pub on Independence avenue. Pretty much every tourist ends up to eat and chill at "Joe's beerhouse", with a good choice of every kind of grilled meat.
With also western prices.

From the Hilton, you will have anything and everything at your disposal. But Joe's is probably the finest local place. I've worked off and on in Namibia, and it truly is a safe country as far as subsaharan locations.

Keep in mind you will be driving on the left. Not a big deal as traffic is light compared to western standards. And folks will generally be friendly.

We stayed at the Hilton earlier this month and thought it was terrific. I hope you will update the review thread after your visit.

We ate at Joe's Beerhouse along with roughly 300 other tourists. It was good fun for one meal. Every tourist in Windhoek must have been there that night. You get seated at communal picnic tables. Read the stories in the menu that explain some of the memorabilia. I recommend the corn fritters. It's a side dish for roughly $1 that I thought was delicious.

We drove from the airport and then onward the following day. We found it easy to drive.

We did not explore Windhoek as it was only an overnight stay between game parks for us.

I went to this Fusion Restaurant two years back and it was great--way calmer than Joe's, and you can get some mopani worms in a comfy environment if you're so inclined.

I too enjoyed my stay at the Hilton and found Windhoek to be quite a pleasant place, I didn't feel unsafe at any point even whilst wandering around at night.

There's also quite a nice wine bar I found about 2-3 minutes walk from the Hilton...it's actually called 'The Wine Bar'. Slightly up on a hill with nice views and excellent wine :D
