Avis at JNB?
 

How does one get to the Avis at JNB? Is there a shuttle? I'll be coming from the IC.

Does anyone happen to know if their GPS units are up to date with all the new roads built over the last couple years?

IIRC they're in the same parking garage as all the other rental companies. It's a short walk from either terminal - on the way to the IC hotel.

Gardyloo is correct. If you have luggage carts, you can use these on the escalators in the garage, too.

Can't speak to the GPS units being up to date, but if you don't know your way around, you should definitely get the GPS, especially if you're sticking to the Joburg area. Are you driving around the country, or staying in the Joburg area? You wouldn't need a GPS for some of the longer drives, however in the larger cities you might find that they're lifesavers (sometimes literally - not being hysterical, but there are a couple of neighborhoods in Joburg that you'll really want to avoid).

I'll be mostly around Centurion and Pretoria, but also Sandton. I generally know my way around, but I haven't driven there since before the World Cup and I know there are lots of changes since then. That said, Avis is asking about 60 rand a day for a GPS unit.

That doesn't seem to much - EUR6 per day. But I guess if you're needing it for a long time it adds up. In which case buying the latest ZA maps for your own GPS might be the answer.
