Guide to JNB (Oliver R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa)

Welcome to the guide to JNB.

If your have any further questions that have not been answered after reading through, please do not hesitate to ask.

Bear in mind that the minimum connection times given below are the shortest connections allowed for tickets on a single PNR. It would be advisable to leave more time than this, particularly if you are arriving during the busy morning period. If you are travelling on two separate PNRs, add on at least an extra hour to the MCTs to allow for whatever delays the Travel Gods may throw at you.

Do note that procedures can change so this guide may not be accurate. If you notice anything has changed or there are any errors, just let me know.

International-Domestic Connection

Minimum connection time: 90 minutes

Once you have deplaned, simply follow the crowd to the immigration hall.
After going through passport control, you will need to collect your luggage and pass through customs irrespective of whether your bags have been tagged through to your final destination.
Exit into the public area and proceed up to departures level by way of the escalators which are opposite and to the left. The escalator can take trolleys.
If your bags have already been tagged through to your destination and you have your boarding passes for the onward domestic flight, you can use fast bag drop.
Otherwise you will need to check-in as normal.
Alternatively, you can use the baggage re-check desks on the left before exiting to the public area (NOTE : These are permanently closed now - Oct 2022).
If you would prefer to avoid the porters and taxi touts in the arrivals halls, there are escalators to the left of these desks which will take you to level 1. From there you will need to go up one more level to reach domestic departures. (NOTE : These escalators are out of service now - Oct 2022).

The domestic terminal is designated as a separate terminal (Terminal B) but do not be confused by this. All the terminals at JNB are under one roof so you barely notice that you are transferring between them.

Domestic-International Connection

If you can interline baggage, you can check it through from your initial departure point to your international destination. Once you land at JNB walk out to exit (ignore signs to go downstairs to baggage reclaim), keep walking through the shops/past the food court, around the atrium and there is a security/emigration point on your front right.

Please see post #106 for an illustrated guide.
[although there is no need to go up the moving walkway and then back down again - just come out of the domestic exit and keep walking straight on that level, which will bring you to the security/emigration point]

International-International Connection

Minimum connection time: 60 minutes

This is where things become a little more tricky.

If you arrive at a jetway, you will see a corridor heading towards International Transfers on the left just before the escalators down to passport control.
If you arrive at a remote stand and are bussed to the terminal, you will see the escalators on the left heading up to International Transfers as you enter the building.
Both these paths are well signposted and there is usually a staff member shouting out "International transit" and waving a sign to direct passengers.
When you go down the corridor, there is a transit immigration point before the transfer desks. Typically the wait here is 1-3 minutes, very much quicker than 'normal' immigration.
Your passport will be stamped with a "TRANSIT" stamp here even though you do not enter the country, and you must ensure that you have the required blank pages otherwise you may not be permitted to continue your transit and instead sent back to your originating point.

A few meters beyond the immigration checkpoint is the main transit information area which have desks for all the international airlines and handling agents.
If your bags have already been tagged through to your final destination, ensure that you give your connecting airline the tag numbers at this time so that they can verify them in their system.
If the tag numbers are not re-verified, they will not be loaded without manual intervention. This is not required if connecting from SAA to SAA flights however.

If your bags have not been tagged through, you will need to find a member of staff in International Transfers from your arriving airline.
Ask them to get one of their baggage services staff to pull your bags off the belt manually and coordinate with staff from your onward airline to retag them to your final destination.

This is a rather convoluted process and can take a long time.

Therefore, if your bags cannot be tagged all the way through, it is advisable to pass through immigration, collect your bags at baggage reclaim and clear customs.
After you clear customs but before you exit to the public area (the exit is a set of sliding doors on your right), you will see a series of baggage re-check desks on your left.
Proceed to these desks since they often have smaller queues and have your bags re-tagged.
Then head up the escalators to your left (do not exit the main doors into the public area) which emerge on the departures level.
Turn right when facing the Vodacom store and the departures security checkpoint is right in front of you.

You can do the entire transit and enter/exit South Africa in less than 5 minutes if your bags come out quickly.

If time permits, the safest option is to clear customs and re-check your bags as described above rather than rely on the interlining system at JNB.

Have a look at post #9 of this thread for pictures.

First time connecting at JNB so all feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!
Make sure you stay in transit i.e. follow the transit signs. If you follow the majority and find yourself by some escalators down to an immigration hall, turn around and make a right turn when you get back to the main passage way.

And then there is the SAA Lounge that you can use.

Hello,

Our next summer weekday flight is DOH->JNB @ 9:50am and our connecting is BA/Comair JNB->VFA @ 11:25 all on a single PNR.

I've read the last 20 pages of this thread and wiki and it seemed like we shouldn't have much to worry about since this is an Intl-to-Intl connection. However, another thread indicated that the "transit immigration" desk can get really backed up and if our flight could be delays. We plan on just using carry ons, but the talk of a long transit desk queue combined with us traveling with 2 kids (meaning, birth certificate checks?) could slow down our connection. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Hi All,

I'll be at JNB around 1 pm after taking the Gautrain from Park Station this Saturday.

My SA flight is around 1700, so of course, there's no worries about catching the flight. Since JNB is an SA hub, I'm going to assume that checking in early won't be an issue.

I'm just curious as to how long it will take to clear security and passport control on an early Saturday afternoon.

Thanks!

Flying through JHB to Mauritius

Hi,
I will be flying from WAW (Poland) through FRA (Germany) and JHB to Mauritius (MRU). The JHB - Mauritius flight leg is with Air Mauritius and is under a separate booking reference. I am not sure I will be able to check in my luggage in WAW directly to Mauritius. I will have about 5 hours in JHB before my flight to MRU.

What would be the best approach if:
- I manage to check in my baggage from WAW to MRU
- I cannot check in my baggage and need to collect it in JHB.

I am afraid that since i have 5 hours i might not be able to recheck it in at the transit check in Air Mauritius desk.

Should I go through regular immigration and customs and go to the public area and there check in at the regular desks?

Thoughts?
Thanks a lot.

The 5h timeframe isn't an issue for transit re-check, and SAA codeshares with Air Mauritius so might be able to re-check, I don't think Air Mauritius has a dedicated transfer desk. Can't help beyond that unfortunately

I am looking at a departure itinerary from the Kruger Park area back home. We will arrive JNB on an SA Airlink flight at 15:50 and depart on ET at 23:00 on two different PNRs. I assume the ET check in desk will not open until 20:00 as their earlier flight departs at 14:10 so the question is what to do for 3.5 to 4 hours.

We could take the Gautrain to Sandton but we will have luggage and I would prefer something local to the airport area if possible. Is there a land-side restaurant where we could waste a few hours or an airport area hotel with a decent day rate?

There is luggage storage available at the airport if you want (from international arrivals, go down the escalator one level towards the car park and it is on the left before the walkway).

Plenty of adequate restaurants/cafes landside at the airport but none really worth writing home about. Decent enough to spend a couple of hours though. They are located all through the departures level on the "A" terminal and on the mezzanine of the "B" terminal.

Another options is Emperor's Palace Resort/Casino complex which is just 5 minutes away by free shuttle bus. Lots of restaurants and other entertainment there as well.

Day room options are the Intercontinental and the City Lodge, both of which are attached to the terminal. City Lodge is a fraction of the cost of the IC however.

There's a bar as well as the end of the domestic check-in area (B side) near where you'd arrive from your Airlink flight (level up from baggage claim), but yes Emperors is a good suggestion. Store your luggage and head there for a meal and some Blackjack or something

We may do just that. Looks like a 5 minute cab/shuttle ride from the terminal.

I figure Quills at the IC is the best of the lot, although service is usually pretty slow, and the culinary quality has been slipping over the years. That goes for both breakfast and dinner.

Incoming: Air France (Int'l) at 10am
Transfer: FlySafir (Domestic) at 4pm

Separate tickets.

I know 6hrs is a lot, but last time my BA>S.AfricaAirways layover was >4hrs and it ended up being a very tight connection in the end (even though BA arrived on time!) because of unbelievably painful immigration process. Queues were going everywhere, they suddenly closed the station where I was waiting for for a long time and then had to line up all over again, then the immigration officer tried to deny entry for absolutely no good reason (she must've been having a bad day). This was at least 5 years ago.

Even if AF arrives an hour late and the immigration takes 3 hours, theoretically I should be good. But then this Flysafir Airlines is an LCC I'm not familiar with. Is this a reliable airline, and are they the type of airline that changes departure times all the time? Would you play it safe by spending the night at JNB and then departing the next day? (Would hate to do that) There's no other flight in the afternoon to my destination.

Unfortunate about the immigration and hopefully better now, as an SA passport holder luckily I get to go through quickly.

FlySafair is extremely reliable, I have flown them several times, most recently a few weeks ago, they're generally on time, do not delay or change departure times much and I usually show up at the airport around 45-60 minutes before departure for commuter flights CPT-JNB for work where I have only hand luggage or no luggage at all.

Thanks! Thats a great feedback on Flysafair. Think I’ll go ahead and book the same-day connection then.

The trip is 2 months from now (Jnb-Grj). It’s pretty cheap now, like $120 US. Would you wait a bit more before booking (to minimize risking any schedule change which you say don’t happen much)? Or should I just go ahead and book at that price?

Just go ahead. Is that one-way? GRJ is a but but expensive than other airports because of the fewer flights
