Does seat selection become available closer to departure?

I'm booked on EI161 on Sunday ... which departs just under 48 hours away ... so I tried to check in and select a seat ... but apparently seat selection is not available

I noticed on FR24 that an aircraft hasn't yet been listed for either tomorrow or Sunday's flight

I don't know if seat selection is included in my (reward) booking - but presumably even if it's not, they would take money from me to choose a seat if they could !

Have people experienced seat selection becoming available closer to departure ?

Seat selection is not available

Depends on the ticket type

As this is a reward ticket you are stuck with automatically assigned seats unless you requested a seat allocation more than 72hours before departure

It will be a A320, likely the A320NEO

what a mistake to make (failure to request a seat 72 hours) !

i'm surprised they don't want to sell me one

I'm currently at DUB while transferring on an intra-EU Aer Club redemption, and I was able to freely select a seat from the seat map for both sectors while checking in online at T-48hrs (and I have no status in Aer Club)

The error message looks like a glitch; this is not normal for travel on EI on redemptions

I just did a dummy cash booking for the same flight ... and it's also saying:

"We're sorry but online seat selection isn't possible for this flight. Seats will be assigned at check in."

That is "normal" for flights under airport control

You'll get that message for any flight leaving today, tomorrow or the day after within the 48-hour check-in time horizon

I recently flew with EI, one segment booked direct with EI, another through another carrier, as an award flight.

The EI direct booking (LHR-DUB), I could select and pay for seats at booking - I bought the cheapest fare, so nothing was free. Some free seats became available at T-48, and I picked 15A on its A20N.

If you didn't book direct with EI, you can call to select/pay for seats in advance. Under T-24, however, it usually goes to airport control.
