Baggage handling on EI leg of United award ticket with stopover in DUB?
 

I have an award ticket with United GLA-DUB-EWR-BOS that starts with a layover in DUB on EI (Stobart Air). It seems while I'm United Gold, I'm limited on the return to Stobart's baggage rules: 1 checked bag at 20kg, one carry-on bag at 7kg, and an extra checked bag costs ~$82.

So I'm wondering what will happen with my checked bags in DUB. Can I collect them and re-check the following morning, or will they be through-checked despite the 15 hr layover? I'd like to check my carry-on for the DUB-EWR-BOS segments, or at least repack since I can check up to 2 bags at 70lbs as United Gold.

Also does anyone know how strict Stobart is about the size of the "personal item?" I'd like to bring my (slim) backpack but it's over the official size limit.

As you have an overnight stay in Dublin, then yes, you can collect your bags on arrival in Dublin. Even if they offer to check them all the way through, I would not accept this - it increases the chances that they go missing.

I would let the bag go through if possible. Pack what you need for the night in DUB in your carry-on and don't worry about checked. You are headed home (from your profile) so if your bags are delayed, it should not be a major hassle and you won't even have to lug them back from BOS.

As to the bag fees, they are indeed correct. Waivers for additional bags and weight do not carry over.
