Flight to US via Dublin

Can anyone please advise how easy ir otherwise it is to travel to the US via Dublin. My son and our granddaughter are looking to do it (in reverse ORD-LHR-ORD). How does the customs and immigration work on the US-UK leg? Thanks

US-UK leg: passport control in Dublin; customs declaration (if necessary) in LHR.

It can be quite smooth if the flights are on one ticket and in the same terminal. If the connection is to or from a bus gate then you need more time (a departure gate closes 25 minutes before departure). The airport is also having some congestion delays so it is as well to have a bit of padding for those. The US-UK connection is quick because immigration is simple and you don't see your checked bag. UK-US is slower because you go through US security and border controls but you only see your bag on TV. I had a rather long connection on Aer Lingus in July because excessive flight delays resulted in missed connections in both directions but 90 minutes would have been ample for each direction in normal circumstances.

Do LHR flights ever use a bus gate?

Very very rarely do LHR use the south gates. For arrivals its trivial as there will either be a bus waiting at the aircraft door or one every 2-3 minutes at the terminal

For ORD - DUB - LHR
Arrive early at T5 ORD, its a zoo and security is slow
Upon arrival Dublin proceed to flight connections, green signs, you most likely will not have to go through security again but will go through passport control
Should take not more than 15-20 minutes to complete the process
Board flight to LHR
At LHR when exiting you take the Green channel for customs or Red if you have something to declare, no immigration check but you may be stopped and spoken to if traveling on a non EU passport (rare but it does happen)

For LHR - DUB - LHR
Pretty much the same in reverse, Upon arrival Dublin proceed to flight connections, green signs, you most likely will not have to go through security again but will go through passport control
Proceed downstairs immediately to US pre clearance and complete CBP formalities
Board flight to ORD

Vastly less stressful than connecting at LHR T5, CDG or FRA
Arrive ORD as a domestic passenger in T5 and exit directly to the baggage reclaim, you can be out of the terminal in under 5 minutes from exiting the aircraft
