Domestic to International (separate res) at ORD?
Hi all! Hoping you can help with this one. Gf wants to go from IND to MAD, which is pricing out at $1400 for her dates. ORD to MAD is $700, but involves several hours of driving time plus Chicago traffic h*ll. She can get a separate ticket from IND to ORD for less than $200, but is concerned with procedure and timing. Would she need to go back through security? Or once she's airside, she's good, even domestic to international? She's my polar opposite and will do carryon only for a nine day trip, so checked baggage won't be an issue. Any logistics benefit to American vs United vs Delta? All three offer numerous daily nonstops from IND to ORD, at roughly the same price.

For ease of transfer, take the AA flight which arrives at T3, take airside shuttle from gates G17, K20 or L24,
to Aer Lingus T5. Having just a carryon makes it a breeze. https://www.flychicago.com/ohare/myflight/connecting/pages/default.aspx |
Perfect, thank you so much for the detailed info!!

Agree re the AA/T3 recommendation above but would add cautionary note to leave plenty of time between the flights. EI will not be sympathetic if there is any disruption to the AA leg. Secondly the transfer bus can be spotty, particularly around lunchtime, don’t automatically believe any staff commitments on the arrival time of the bus... It can actually be quicker sometimes to exit T3 and get the landslide train around to T5. Also, make sure to have checked in online and have a printed boarding pass for the EI flight. |

ATS (the train) is not operational M-F due to system upgrades, so in the majority of cases using it will not be an option.

Got it, thank you! I will let her know to make sure to leave extra time just in case. Fortunately, there are so many daily IND-ORD options, she can work around just about any schedule.
