Calculating Avios

I'm confused about how Avios are calculated and I am looking for some simple rules of thumb as to how many avios point I should see on my account. My confusion arises as sometimes I have one avios amount awarded for a return flight (2 sectors) and sometimes I have 2 avios amounts which I assume is the outward and inward legs of the trip. Also, avios for identical trips (fare basis and route) show up with different avios amounts. Therefore I am a bit at sea as to what I should expect to see. So, taking the below made up example, can someone calculate what my avios balance should be. Also if someone can confirm if I should see avios for each leg of a return flight or only one balance covering the outward and inward legs.

Example. DUB-LHR
Price of outward leg EUR 50
Price of the inward leg EUR 100

Total fare is EUR 150 broken down by fare of EUR 100 and Taxes and Charges of EUR 50.

Any help greatly appreciated.

it almost feels like Aer Lingus make up the number randomly - it's a bit of a joke.

A week with no replies tells me people are stumped on this one.

I have no idea either. Here are my last 4 trips all one way Irl-UK or UK-Irl and all flown as silver.

Fare.....Avios......Class
0...........7............A
4stg......60 ...........Z
57.99....65...........L
3.99.....180..........Z

Maybe there is some logic there but I don't see it.

Can you tell us more about the "0" fare ticket that earned 7 Avios?

I meant more general info like - what routes have a base fare of zero??? Assuming that this was a revenue booking!!!

These fares were easily got on DUB-BHX and DUB-MAN over the summer months. (€16.99 one way). This has hardened more recently with the lowest fare now at €24.99. I am not sure what other destinations this was available on. The one above is DUB-BHX.

thanks....I wasn't aware that zero fares were even a thing anymore!!!

Actually I have just looked at a recent Man-Dub e-ticket and it is showing the following;

Details Fare p.p. Taxes & Charges Total
1 Adult(s): GBP 0.00 GBP 16.99 GBP 16.99
Total Amount GBP 16.99

Admin Fee: GBP 8.00
TOTAL GBP 24.99

This is another zero fare with a total price of £24.99. The zero fares are more common than I thought.

I have worked them out before as total fare including taxes less the admin fee times 3 for €, 4 for £ plus your tier bonus.

Hi Tom

Should I expect to see one or two postings of avios for a return flight?

I get two separate postings for return trips.

Two postings per return. I've never tried to calculate the avios per leg just the total for the trip.
