ATH-AMS has a reduced frequency this winter and S26. Only a single daily flight remains, compared to 2 last year.

Let's see IF all of these stay the way they are currently announced. Aegean has many times in the past changed/reduced the frequency and even completely removed flights to some (new) destinations (or where an increase in frequency had been announced/scheduled) around February-March.

What is interesting is that Aegean has applied for slots at Gatwick for summer 2026 and they got rejected.

Now I see that Marathon Airlines has successfully secured slots at London City and Athens is announced as a new destination for Summer 2026. Could it be Aegean Airlines launching ATH-LCY instead by wet leasing a E170 or E190 from Marathon Airlines?

That would be something new. In all fairness though, any airline could use Marathon's services - this does not have to be Aegean, right? And seeing their recent safety record I wonder if Aegean would choose to do business with them. Could be SkyExpress as well, potentially?

How should we interpret that 420-movement number? Assuming each flight requires 2 movements, and this spans a 6-month timeframe (26 weeks), that means 8 weekly flights? I wonder if Marathon even has the aircraft capacity for that.. They only have a single 100-seater Embraer.

By the way, that would be a pretty terrible flight from LCY to ATH. Those Embraers are good as regional jets, but on such a long flight...would be rather cramped. I'd rather use LHR or LGW and be on an A320, personally.

I have a feeling it is going to be Aegean. I don’t see anyone else launching LCY-ATH. BA has enough E190s to operate the flight themselves. And who else could it be? Sky Express? I doubt it.

As for the comfort, I tend to disagree. Those E190 are quite comfortable and I would take them any day when compared to a packed A320neo.

And BA is quite successful with its LCY base.

Seems they are also adding Athens-Rotterdam. I've never flown from Rotterdam.
Wonder why they think it makes more sense than the EIN route they tried for a while.

Fantastic news!

RTM is a great little airport.

Twice-weekly service on Thursday and Sundays commences on Thursday September 3

NOTE: The timetable indicates flights on Wednesdays, but the booking tool instead shows flights on Thursdays

A3634 dep ATH 1340 arr RTM 1610
A3635 dep RTM 1700 arr ATH 2110

HV operate on EIN-ATH but there is no competition from RTM

In winter there is little holiday travel to Greece. Most people travel for business or family. Both of those make a lot of sense in randstad, as most of Greek diaspora is in that area I believe. Considering that the second daily AMS flight was likely lost due to slot issues (And not nesesarilily because they wanted to reduce capacity...) it also makes sense to operate a flight to the same area around Amsterdam. For most of the country RTM would be easier to reach than EIN... by public transport at least.

If that is the case, then RTM indeed makes sense. Though I think it would need to be notably cheaper than the AMS option to make sense, as, for the vast majority of people, Schiphol is far easier to get to via public transport than RTM.
