Aegean AIR-FI

Anyone heard about Aegean Air-Fi? I flew ATH-AMS this morning and for a brief period on the ground in Ath there was a wifi network in the plane. I took screenshots of the homepage. There was an option of chatting to other logged on passengers in the Chat section. I couldn't however connect to any other websites. Does anybody have more information about this Air-fi? Are Aegean trialing wifi on their planes?

So they're about to launch their in-flight entertainment system! We were discussing this a while back- Here's the thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/aegea...et-access.html

I remember also seeing a wifi network on the plane a few months ago (also on the ground, in ATH) and wondering what it was. Couldn't connect though...

AIR-FI is a third party IFE solution normally for fleets without screens in the seat allows media streaming of local content . on the plane it's not allowing a live Internet connection.

This is good news, especially for those LHR-ATH flights

This was supposed to be introduced earlier but I guess some tech issues. Will be great to finally have it similar to the one IBX have introduced which I find passes the time especially on 3+ hour flights.

Nice! However it much depends on the movie collection they decide to purchase. I tried this product once on Lufthansa short haul and I was not impressed due to the extremely limited movie collection.

Why? Are those flights especially boring?

Certainly not as boring as British Airways these days!

This is great news, can't wait to try it out.

Well, there's usually nothing to do after the meal and there's usually 2 hours to kill. Some entertainment would be nice.

These are strictly prohibited on almost all European carriers due to the build in transmitter.

Here's a report of Air-Fi already being used (August 26th, ATH-MAD): https://www.airliners.gr/community/viewtopic.php?t=9622

The guy says it was "disappointing", but provides little to no details. I wonder if there were any streamable movies, or if it was just a kind of place holder with limited functionality.

Initially he calls it "Sci Fi" by mistake

Aegean finally launched its AirFi infotainment system. Their latest iOS app update adds an “AEGEAN stream” tab.

Anyone flying in the next days please report back on what the new system
offers as well as any possible charges.

TAROM has also AirFi... IMO is useless if the airline does not offer powerplugs.. no one wants to get at their destination with 5% battery
