Flame-Free Questions on A3 - ask your newbie (and not so newbie) questions here

With the evolution of the Miles&Bonus program, there are a number of threads on this forum that contain outdated information, plus a further set that - whilst describing the new program - contain conflicting information that has only been crystallised as we all discover how certain aspects of the program either work or are interpreted.

It is perhaps therefore unsurprising that many new members find searching through this myriad of threads a little daunting, and consequently they post a question in one of the FAQ threads.

This tends to irk those who've been around for a while who expect the new posters to at least do some basic searching before posting a question that has probably been asked many times before. This also causes the forums to become very congested and less easy to read through with the same question being asked and answered many times.

I am therefore creating a thread, which will be stickied, for anyone to ask any question they like about the M&B program where they are unsure or it's not obvious where they should be posting it.

There is no such thing in this thread as a stupid question, no issue with asking a repeat question, and any answers should be 100% flame-free. I will take a dim view of anyone that abuses a member or provides a less than helpful answer (such as 'do a search') to any question asked in here, because this is being created to benefit all of us so the other threads flow more cleanly. Thank you for your co-operation on this.

It might be that I move questions to more appropriate threads so they receive an answer more quickly, but if I do so I will always add a note to indicate where they originated, and ask that the flame-free answer principle be respected.

Hi all,

I qualified for silver today and got the welcome letter in my email this morning. I needed 510 tier miles to upgrade my tier and last week I had two flights. One that gave me 500 and another that earned 1019 miles.

When I log in into my account on Aegean's website, I can see that I am upgraded to the silver tier, however it seems like the 1019 miles all got "lost" and only 10 of them were used for the upgrade. I would expect that I would need 1000 miles less (7000) in order to retain my silver status, but on the website it looks like I need 8000 and the rest miles from my last flight that qualified me were not taken into account.

For upgrading to gold, those 1000 miles were already deducted from the total 24000 needed.

Do you think I should contact Aegean to figure out what's going on or is it just the way it works?

This is how it works.

Carry-over of miles only happens from tier-to-tier (i.e. the excess will count towards Gold status), not from year-to-year (i.e. the excess does not count towards next year's qualification at the same level).

If you reach Gold, the same thing will apply - miles beyond those needed will not carry forward, but obviously you will continue to obtain miles to spend.

It seems like I still don't quite understand something in that system. I see on Aegean's website that I still need 8000 miles to maintain my silver tier and even though I took 2 flights after (!) I qualified for silver, the miles still were not deducted from the 8000 needed to maintain the silver status.

In my account, it looks like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uhshfpmkvp...33.03.png?dl=0

Should not all flights after the silver upgrade count for the status? My flights that gave me silver status were on the 09/04 and on the website it says "card upgrade" for the 13th of April.

Hope you can help.

Your account appears completely correct, and you can trust the figures and dates.

You qualified for Silver on 13th April (so far as A3 is concerned, because that's when the card upgrade actually took place - ignore the flight date). That means your membership year for the purposes of retaining status starts on 13th April 2015. All activity for your previous period is erased so far as re-qualification is concerned, so you need to re-qualify again from zero level (status) miles and flights - so these show as 8k/2 flights or 16k.

However, you also have the opportunity to move up to Gold by accumulating sufficient miles/flights in a one year period. Because it's not a renewal, the year runs from the time of your last flight, not the card upgrade date (hence why your dates vary slightly). You must have had 2,522 carry over miles (more than you thought - don't complain!) from your Silver qualifying flight, so these have carried forward towards a potential move up to Gold.

Thanks, I don't complain - but I don't get it why the upgrade took place on the 13th of April. It's just weird because if I had the flight that qualified me 3 days prior to that, so it would be fair if the upgrade was on the 9th as well.

I suppose because it takes time for the miles to be credited to your account, so when they actually credit the miles, they will upgrade your status, so the miles only actually got credited on the 13th, so they upgraded you then.

Correct, and this is something we have seen with manual upgrades to Gold for retro-claims that have take many months to resolve.

This is actually fairer - three days probably makes very little difference, but if you were deprived of Gold benefits because a claim took weeks or even months, you would want a year's worth of benefits from your first opportunity of actually being able to use them - hence why A3 gives you that by making your Gold year start from the time you can first take advantage of the status.

Next best star alliance program

Bigger picture/elephant in the room: now that A3's partner accruing is no longer valid and UA has switched to a fare based mile accumulation system, what is the next best Star Alliance program to credit to for what would otherwise be a US mileage run? (e.g. good deal on South America).

A3's partner accrual is entirely valid - you can (ignoring the SQ fiasco recently) rely on the earning charts.

There's a dedicated thread in the *A forum ...
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/star-...post-here.html
... which deals with the best FFP choice, and that question is really outside the scope of this thread. I'd recommend you post in there for a better answer.

I have tried searching for this but either I am too stupid or this question is too newbie:

Do Aegean/Olympic award flights count against the 4x Aegean/Olympic metal requirement for easy requalifing with 12k miles as a current Gold?

Thanks!

No, 'fraid not - they must be revenue (miles-earning).

Okay, not sure if this should be its own thread or if this already has its own thread buried somewhere, but has anybody tried to use the 50% off vouchers? As they were unavailable for the cheap fare classes, it actually made me aware of the fact that go light and flex seems to book in to the same fare class. (At least for all of the flights I was looking at) And since ineligible fares were the only fares available, I was unable to use the voucher online, and had to call the call centre. They booked the tickets, although they still booked us into fare classes that show as not eligible on the voucher. (But they got the right price, so I won't complain too much) Does anybody else have any similar experience? I know I am not explaining this well, so apologies for that.

What you are seeing is the "ticket type" pricing scheme, where the service level of each such ticket type is just an addendum to the base price.

For instance, a U-fare is sold as both "Golight" and "Flex". U in itself costs 37€ and the Flex addendum is 40€ - a flex ticket is 77€ in this case. When U is sold out, regardless of if sold as golight or flex, A3 moves on to T with a base price of 52€ - Golight now costs 52€ and Flex 92€.

So both Golight and Flex sells from the same fare bucket and has the same avilability. This is in contrast to other pricing schemes (you might be used to) where the airline reserves certain fare classes to certain service levels. Example
O,Z,R - Deep discount - no refund/no change
K,L,M,P,S,T - Discount - semi flexible
Y,B,H - Full flex
where each service class sells independently.

The ticket type scheme is used to make legacy airline's fare structure similar to that of a LCC and typically only offers the lowest priced fare class at any given time. Just like you've noticed, that makes it really hard to buy a specific fare class online.
