A3 Carry-on Policy

Do I get a bag and a personal item or just one item total? In practice, would I be able to take 2 US-sized carry ons on board or would I be asked to size and weigh my carry ons and pay if they were oversize/overweight?

Dude, you are really on a roll when it comes to starting threads, not so much when its about replying to other people's questions, and this only your 4th thread about carry-on policy in the last 3 days. Dont you think that its just better to search google sometimes?

I'm sorry if you found this offensive. Yes, I did start 4 different threads asking for recent experiences regarding carry-on policy because I am taking family to Europe over the summer and am currently deciding who to fly and what types of suitcases to pack in the last 3 days.

I don't do this all the time, but when I'm planning a trip and I'm unfamiliar with a lot of details, I may start a lot of threads in a short period of time pertaining to different aspects of a trip in the works.

I did search these issues on Google. Many of the threads were very old, and I thought that if an airline didn't care if bags were oversize in 2010, they could possibly care now.

Are you seriously going to complain that I never respond to other people's questions?

To be fair, the OP is also asking about the practicality versus the written rule.

Kanor has given you the link to A3's baggage policy. All European airlines will be similar on size, probably variable on weight.

In Europe the official rule is much more likely to be applied compared to North America (certainly on size/quantity, less so on weight) - although, as always, YMMV. You may also find your fellow passengers are a little less tolerant of someone so obviously trying to bend the rules (it's not like you're particularly close), so some consideration of local sensibilities might be appropriate.

Trying to choose between AF/BA/A3/LH is an impossible task because what you get away with one day on a given airline you might not on the next depending on the flight load, how observant the crew are, where you board - although it's generally true to say that LH are more likely to pick you up on this than most other airlines.

Personally, if it's more expensive taking the chance, I'd pay any luggage fee - there's a better than even chance you'll be pulled up.

But, as NWIFlyer rightly expanded, there never are clear answers to these practicalities, as you surely have experienced in travels before. Best is if you are within the limit, and limit is on the respective webpages.

Being a check-in and gate agent for both LH and A3, I do not know how stricly rules are enforced in N. America but round here, it all usually depends on the flight load. If the flight is half full, we won't care too much about some handbags being too large, even though if you still come with something that's really enormous we'll take it anyway. Otherwise if it's a full flight it's quite simple : everything that seems too large goes in the gauge and it doesn't fit there's no time for talking, you'll have time to take some stuff out but not to discuss the size and try to keep it. And it is as well true that other passengers can get very upset with this kind of situation, seeing someone trying to board with a handbag that is twice as much the regular size, but I thought that was the same everywhere, are people in N. America really more tolerant?

No problems about the weight though. But in practice you are allowed one handbag that fits the given dimensions on A3 website + briefcase, laptop, even a small backpack would fit, it's all up to being reasonable in the end and understanding the space your belongings take in the aircraft

Hope it helped!

In addition, seeing you have *G status, you could expect some extra leeway as far as cabin baggage goes (your 2 bags). Even though this is not a published benefit, rarely would you get scoffed at by a gate agent being a status customer, although as always YMMV.

Whilst resurrecting a fairly old post, it might be worth recording that, last Thursday, the gate staff at Gatwick were weighing every bag that had not been processed at a check-in desk and issued with a tag. Whilst there was a small amount of latitude allowed on the 8kg, several people with weights <10kg had their luggage taken for gate check - although it wasn't clear if a charge was made given there was every chance some were travelling on GoLight fares.

Travelling in a very sparsely populated Business Cabin, my luggage was still weighed at the check-in desk and - though over at an enormous 9.6kg - allowed through and tagged. Despite the tag, the gate agent still asked if I'd like to have my luggage put in the hold. Well, if I'd wanted that I would have checked it in the first place, wouldn't I?

So, is/was this just a Gatwick foible, or likely to spread to other outstations?

There were no problems the last time flying from CHQ, ATH or SKG with people (including me) taking carry-on luggage plus a personal item/small bag. From SKG to CHQ it seemed that every single person in the plane had an extra bag with cake from the most famous Thessaloniki pastry shop
