The issue is not with LOT, at least not yet. My beef is that on top of taxes of 25.90 Euros, I have to pay a fee of 20 Euros for an itinerary I can't book online. This is all A3-related, has nothing to do with LOT. I'll file a complaint, not sure it will do any good.

Any idea why the taxes are so huge otw back to Asia compared to going the flight going to Europe?

Blimey, what a lot of questioning.
1) Bang for buck. It's all relative, depending on the cash alternatives. It really isn't many miles for an intra-Asia award on Aegean. I've paid many more miles using UA miles on TG.
2) Why Air China. Because of the flight times. Yes there's a myriad of alternatives, and if I had the time I'd have gone via Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo etc. Maybe in Business. And in the past I have, and in the future I will, but on this occasion I wanted to get somewhere, at a certain time, fairly quickly.
3) I don't mind Air China. Happily used them domestically within China, and I expect Bangkok to be the same sort of experience, just twice as far.

ZH H fares are Shenzhen Airlines Economy Tickets booked in H class I assume.
According to the M&B T&C they should be upgradable using miles. @razorblade what issues are you running into?
