How is it that one Star Alliance member can charge the YQ and one not? Doesn't the Star Alliance member who issues the award ticket have to charge the customer the fees that the carrier imposes, wehich would either include the YQ or not? It shouldn't depend on who issues the ticket, rather the Carrier

And, Doesn't this give me a huge reason not to credit my flights to A3, and rather to United? Why am I crediting miles to A3, when the redemptions are so expensive? I suppose because the gold renewal threshhold is low...

Please, let's not start discussing this again!!! It is a simple fact of life that European FFPs charge much more money that US ones for award tickets. This is true for all three alliances and it has been discussed many, many times in several forums. I also wish that it were not like that, but there's presently nothing that can be done. In last analysis, we are free to join any FFP we want. I guess there must have been a few people who tried to reverse this practice going to court and who failed...

+1.
there are many FFPs to chose from, and they are all different. live with it!
e.g. why does ANA only allow return awards and no one-ways?
why does LM only allow connections and no stop-overs?
why does LH group collect YQ and UA doesnt?
why does SQ release long haul awards to its own FFP and not to *A?

Your feeling is what I would call buyer's remorse. the poster likely only saw the glitter of the *A Gold and how to earn miles, without researching on the T&Cs to actually redeem those miles.

only way to sweeten it is to research on;
1)Sweet-spots, such as the ones highlighted below
http://runningwithmiles.boardingarea...-aegean-miles/

2) low tax routes, and low YQ airlines (mostly in ASIA)

3)Alternative redemption methods, such as hotel stays instead of flights etc.
its all on the M&B website.

Lol this blogpost mentions Caribbean to Israel as a great value. Good luck finding a one connection itinerary to anyone on dates they want to travel.

My latest redemption experience, which went pretty smooth:

1. Called A3 and asked for a one way Business class flights from BKK/SIN/HKG to Moscow for dates around feb 20.

Got following availability:

From Feb 16 - 23 for all days available seats with TK for HKG-IST-VKO route
110€ + 55k miles

Occasional availability with Thai and LH from BKK-CPH-DME
around 330€ + 55k miles

Sample prices for Feb 16 to Moscow:
  • TK: from HKG 108.59 EUR
  • LH: from HKG 135.37 EUR
  • Thai/LH from BKK 334.68EUR
  • TK: from SIN 233.31
  • TK: from KUL 217.75 EUR
+55k Miles

2. Ended up booking HKG-IST-VKO route for 110 EUR

I was able to choose an alternative connecting flight from IST to VKO later that day to spend 8h longer in IST

I guess your "intuition" failed you there ... Okay, point taken. I updated my post to indicate that LM refers to Lifemiles (AVs FFP). It is just a rough gauge and does not replace a call to the M&B contact center though I found it match so far in 5-6 instances with only 1 time being off. YMMV.

Haha, yes it did!

I guess Lifemiles is a stronger brand than Avianca in many parts of the world, so the acronym comes naturally I guess. I normally use Ana's program to search awards and was looking for a tip how to search 'Ana-flights-as-a-*A-award'.
So I went 'Logan, really?!', came to the site and had a look around before I realised 'Ey, wait a minute, this is avios based..'

While it might seem far fetched that LM could have worked, I have found that many of the best "work-arounds" are the small odd ones. (Like the Saudi Airlines site that could pull e-ticket receipts for any e-ticket number...)
So whenever someone hints something on FT, one better go try it.

Looking at a redemption between HKT-SIN and SIN-BKK
HKT-SIN, no direct route, they route via TG
quoted €145 and 25000 miles for 2 Y tickets

Lots of availability on TG and SQ for the SIN-BKK route
SQ: €340 (!) plus 25k miles for 2 Y tickets
TG: €152 plus 25k miles for 2 Y tickets

Cash fares are at ca GBP350 for 2 for the HKT-SIN-BKK route with SQ, so, if I take the cheapest option, I end up with €297 +50k miles
with FX rate on xe.com, that makes GBP225 +50k miles, so the difference between cash and miles is GBP 125, i.e. 0,25 ppm.
Not a good value there

Yes, not really worth it and SQs YQ is still bonkers as always thanks to mismanaged fuel hedges.

That's good to know, will hold off booking any tickets until next month. Can I ask which news source you heard that from?

Flying into HKG is still expensive, the only way to be truly free from YQ is to redeem on CX... or UA

BA is still charging Ł190 YQ for LHR-HKG Y oneway. Less than 10 years ago you could fly return for less than that!

Researching TYO-MEM in J x5. Can do either UA NRT-ORD or OZ NRT-ICN-EWR (last domestic leg of both are UA). Is it worth adding the extra stop in ICN for OZ or should I just do the UA. Haven't flown either but thinking OZ J must be better.
