What I used to guesstimate the award fees is look up the flights I want on ITA and specify the booking class. E.g., in your example, the routing field would contain "SK / f bc=M" for the first leg, and "SK CPH SK / f bc=M" for the second leg, to force ITA to only show SK legs in booking class M. From the alternatives, I selected the flights operated by SK and got the following quote:

Code:
Fare 1: Carrier SK MSERTM STO to FRA (rules) €325.78
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code M
Covers ARN-FRA (Economy)

Fare 2: Carrier SK MSERTM FRA to STO (rules) €325.78
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code M
Covers FRA-CPH (Economy), CPH-ARN (Economy)

Swedish Passenger Charge (YA) €17.73
SK YQ surcharge (YQ) €108.68
Danish Passenger Service Charge (ZO) €15.14
German Airport Security Tax (DE) €6.57
German Passenger Service Charge (RA) €25.73
German Air Transport Tax (OY) €7.50

Subtotal per passenger €833.35
Number of passengers x1

Total airfare & taxes €833.35
Without the airfare, it sums up to around 181€. On top of this, A3 charges a 20€ booking fee, so to me it sounds like the first and last agent got it right (201€). Maybe the third agent was looking at a direct return, some other flights, or SK flights operated by LH?

From some quick googling, it looks to me like Aeroplan doesn't charge any fuel surcharge for awards on SK flights, which is probably why you get a cheaper price than with A3 in this case.
cheers! helpful and informative in explaining how A3 calculates the taxes.

i was aware that SK is one of the carrier for whom AE doesnt charge YQ, and usually do use SK or UA in Scandinavian-North American routings...

but still... A3 redemptions, calculating taxes with this method, almost cost more than market fares depending on airline. I guess I will save my A3 redemptions for inter-NA or TPAC redemptions...

Yes you're right, if the base fare is low, an A3 redemption is not so good value. It might even be negative value if the taxes and fees are higher for full-fare economy (and therefore also A3 awards) than for discounted economy.

In general, redemptions in F or C are much better value, or possibly one-way flights in Y on carriers where no discounted one-way fares are available.

Short-haul economy redemptions are, typically, the worst way of using miles on most European Frequent Flyer Programmes. But they certainly have their uses.

The direct comparison against the cheapest advance fare, though, is not a fair one. Your Aegean M&B redemption can be cancelled as late as 30 minutes before the flight with the payment of just a €20 cancellation fee (M&B even allows you to reclaim the miles after an unnotified no-show on payment of a €30 no-show fee). Your cheap bought-months-in-advance ticket is not refundable at all, will cost you even more to change, and has no value whatsoever if you do not use it as booked.

Short-haul economy redemptions should really only be considered when:
a) you need flexibility and the possibility to cancel for a nominal fee
b) you need a one-way ticket on a carrier that doesn't offer cheap one-way tickets
c) the cash fare is already high, but there are award seats available.

Was quoted and booked HKG-TPE-NRT vv for a measly €90.10 on EVA Air at Christmas/New Year - about 1/5 the price of, and far more flexible than, any cash fare I could find. All done in about 10 minutes via the UK number and telling the agent the exact flights I wanted, thanks to having checked Award Nexus and checking possibilities in advance.

I used SkypeOut and while the phone line was appalling at my end, the agent was able to hear me clearly and was very friendly. Received an e-mailed confirmation/itinerary in less than 20 minutes. Excellent experience all around. ^

Redemption issues

Hi all,

I am trying to book a ticket from a regional airport in Scandinavia to the US (actually almost anywhere in the US). Usually such journeys require two transits (e.g. Frankfurt and Toronto/Philadelphia/Newark etc) depending on where and how. Anyways, the Aegean call center says two transits cannot be booked on a signle PNR under the T&C's of the miles and bonus programme. I read them, and I am not sure I see such clauses. They call it two "stop-overs".

So...
1. Is it correct that m&b does not allow issuance of a single-PNR reward ticket when two transits (=three flights) are involved?
2. Is it correct that if I try to book Scandinavia-USA with two transits (=three flights) then a one-way business class ticket is 66.000 miles (plus fees, but we'll those out of this discussion)?

Many thanks,
Scandi777

1. Yes
2. Yes

You just need to read the remarks of the award chart...

* An award ticket on Star Alliance flights may include one stopover with duration up to 24 hours

If it is under 24hrs it is not a stopover so poor wording I guess as they should call it a transit instead. That's quite stingy and doesn't make a lot of sense. Even LH M&M allows 3 sectors and 2 transits under 24hrs on a one way. Oh well can't have it all.

Does anyone have experience regarding changing *A award flights?

In the A3 T&Cs:
Members are able to change Ticket’s date and time, up to 30 minutes before flight’s departure time, upon a re-issue fee of 20 Euros per ticket.
I have an award booking (one way, two flights with two different *A partners) that I need to change, but I am curious what I am allowed to do and what not. The origin and destination would be the same, so for sure I should be allowed to change to the same flights on different days.

But what about connecting somewhere else? What about different carriers? The award ticket is issued on A3 390 stock, so from that point of view it doesn't seem to be linked to any of the carriers.

In this particular case, the taxes and fees would be lower with another connection+carrier, so I am even considering outright cancelling the original ticket and making a new booking for 20+20e cancellation+booking fee, instead of the 20e change fee.

Any experiences in how long it would take for the miles to get re-credited to the account in case of cancellation over the phone? Could I cancel and rebook on the same phone call?

And for money for taxes & fees to get credited back to credit card?

Is the 20 Euro booking fee charged per booking or if I book two separate one-way tickets at the same time would I only be charged once?

LHR-ZRH overnight ZRH-CAI in C for 21,000 miles and Euro270 of tax. Not amazing value but as the cheapest Y revenue ticket was north of Euro800 I am pretty happy especially with the A340 from ZRH!

The agent was friendly, very efficient, spoke excellent English and when she popped me on hold to confirm payment also issued the ticket. By the time I had hung up the flight was showing on the Swiss website and Myflights with a ticket number.

Compared to the unlamented BD ICC this was blisteringly efficient!

Hi everyone,

I joined A3 M&B last month, and will reach *G by October. I'm debating whether to continue crediting to A3 after October or to return to AP (native). I'd like to stay with A3 for two reasons: (i) I won't fly frequently enough (from next year) to reach *G with AP; and, (ii) I'd like to stay loyal to A3 as a way of thanking them for helping me reach *G easily. But, I'd also like to understand the ease with which I'd be able to redeem with A3. I've a few questions in this regard:

1) Per the A3 website, if I fly YYZ-YVR-YYZ in Y-class, am I correct in understanding that I'd need to shell out 25K miles + applicable YQ?

2) AP differentiates between "short" (15K to redeem) and "long" (25K) haul flights within Canada & Continental USA. Any such distinctions with A3?

2) Am I correct in understanding that I'd need 60K miles to redeem a Y-class RT flight from YYZ to ANY location in Europe? If so, doesn't that seem great, considering AP could require up to 75K miles for the same trip?

3) Why is there a table indicating redemption on US Airways flights? I thought they were leaving *A.

4) Besides the restriction on connections and the fact that YQ is extra, I don't understand the downsides of redeeming with A3 vs. AP. Am I missing something?

Thanks for advising!
