Thanks for the helpful info though
They recently changed this, probably to discourage first class redemptions. October last year I was still able to book a combined F/J redemption award without extra cost.

I was saving up miles for a long-haul redemption but just decided to splash 60K on some short-haul intra-Europe flights in Y. This saved a few hundred euros compared to the asking price of the airlines, and will enable me to go on a trip I want to, which would otherwise have been too expensive to be worthwhile.

HEL-FRA I and FRA-HKG O should that not price price out as 75k plus taxes? Its showing me 100k
100k sounds right. Even if it were 75k (and it’s unfortunately not), the fuel
surcharges on such award tickets is high enough that I would try to avoid it.

Given the fuel surcharges for such A3 award tickets, I would be more inclined to keeping my A3 Miles for other use and use miles from another Star Alliance program that doesn’t charge the fuel surcharge.

Has this changed recently? I’m pretty sure that last year I’ve booked a LH F to HKG and a connection in Europe in J for 75k points.

Yes that's "new-ish".
Don't remember when exactly they changed it, must have been around December 2017.

Frankfurt Bangkok Sydney

I see I forgot to tell about my award redemption here. The last week in January 2018 I booked FRA-BKK-SYD one-way for 2 people in Thai business class for 28 DEC 2018. Cost 150.000 M&B miles and 420 euro.

It would have cost 380 euro via the online tool, BUT the seats, like MANY others, were not available/visible there. From memory I saw not more than one or two departures the last week in December with 2 available business seats - when I called the hotline, there were *at least* five times higher availability. I obviously don't know if the online tool availability has improved since then, but I can say for certain that in January 2018, the availability was MUCH higher through the hotline compared to in the tool.

Now I have a question to this: I will reach 50.000 M&B miles in about a month, which means I could add on our little connection flight TXL-FRA to the above mentioned award ticket. But is there anyway to say how much the extra cost in fees would be for this? I can't see this until I really have the 50.000 miles so I can book "for real". Are we talking about 20 euro flat booking fee, or several hundred euros? In the latter case I would instead consider flying down to Frankfurt the day before departure on a normal ticket and stay in a hotel.

TXL-FRA in C is EUR 77.07 per person in taxes and fees.
I don't know how much it would be to add that leg to an existing booking. Anyway I think you'll be better off buying a revenue ticket.

Not to mention that Aegean usually does not issue 3-leg awards.

Thanks, Chiller. I decided to call the Aegean hotline and ask, the lady told me I would first have to cancel the present ticket and then book the new one with two stops. Too messy and too risky for my taste, we're going down to Frankfurt the evening before and staying at an airport hotel instead.

Does anyone have experience with cancelling an award booking?

I called about a week ago to cancel my booking, though it still shows as confirmed through A3 and LH (flight is operated by LH). Miles haven't yet been credited back. The lady on the phone told me miles would take about a week to be processed, though I'm wondering if my booking has been cancelled at all? Any advice if this is normal or should I call again?

Thanks.

The miles are usually posted in a couple of days. The bookings are not removed from the "My bookings" section. In my case the bookings were visible since the actual departure date.

Call Again. Is the status still shows "Confirmed", it means the ticket wasn't actually cancelled as requested.
Advice to you is, when you call, dont say you called before to cancel bla bla bla.
Just say you have a ticket that you want to cancel, and see what the agent tells you about the ticket.
If they proceed to confirm the cost and tell you how the refund will be returned via your credit card etc (as though nothing ever happened), then you stop them and ask if the ticket is actually still valid. If confirmed so, then you "suddenly remember" you called to cancel a few weeks before, and ask if it was processed.
Now, if the agent tells you that your ticket cancellation is already under processing from your call a few weeks back, then you "suddenly remember" you called to cancel a few weeks before, and ask why the miles are not yet back into your account.

=>Learn how to "handle" the call center agents, otherwise they will "handle you" and ask you to wait a few more weeks without even actually checking the status!

Thanks. That's what I already thought, so I'll call again and follow your advice.

EDIT: Turns out you were right, ticket wasn't cancelled. After I called again, the booking immediately disappeared from both A3 and LH websites. Thanks once again!

Booked intraEuropean travel on LOT through Warsaw, which was least expensive compared to LH, OS and TK. However, since the website didn't offer me the routing requiring an overnight connection, I was forced to do it over the phone and was charged the 20 Euro booking fee, almost as much as the taxes of 25.90 Euros. This is unlike other airlines who waive the fee if you can't book the routing online. Good program to easily achieve status but terrible to redeem miles.

The LOT website is just about the worst there is. If there's a more useless website than theirs, I haven't come across it yet.

And their app is a heap of steaming brown stuff also.
