Tbh I'm not 100% sure but looking at ITA Matrix I attributed the high amount to the Mexico taxes:

Btw still relatively cheap compared to Germany/US "taxes" for LH F where it was ~300-400€

always polite to clarify your reference source.
seems this (link) is what you are looking at.
CHAPTER 10: AEGEAN PARTNERSHIP WITH AIRLINE COMPANIES-MEMBERS OF STAR ALLIANCE
STAR ALLIANCE UPGRADE AWARD WITH MILES REDEMPTION
9. Each Star Alliance Upgrade Award request is for max.4 passengers and 2 flight segment per Miles+Bonus Account.

no mention of number of awards per upgrade in the T&Cs.

you can request for and purchase upgrades for up to 4 passengers (on the same flight) using one account.
if you have a family of 5 on the same flight, either one person is staying in economy, or you use two accounts to request for and purchase upgrades.
so, you pay 4x 50k miles to upgrade 4 people EU-Far east Y->C. 5th person cannot be upgraded from your account.
if you have a separate account with miles, then you would need 1x 50k miles to upgrade the 5th person from the second account.

you can request for and purchase upgrades for up to 2 flight segments (on the same ticket) using one account.
if you have a two stop itinerary (LHR-FRA-BKK-MNL) one way on a single ticket, you can only upgrade 2/3 of the legs using one upgrade request on that ticket.
so, you pay 4x 50k miles to upgrade 4 people EU-Far east Y->C (either LHR-FRA-BKK or FRA-BKK-MNL). remaining leg in economy.
or
(this part is fuzzy)
if you have a one stop itinerary (LHR-FRA-BKK) return on a single ticket, you can only upgrade the outbound LHR-.BKK 2 legs using one upgrade request on that ticket.
so, you pay 4x 50k miles to upgrade 4 people EU-Far east Y->C on the outbound, and then pay another 4x 50k miles to upgrade 4 people on the inbound.

The additional 190 Euro YQ is still listed there on ITA Matrix but is not being charged by A3. I tried some other dummy bookings with LH and this seems be be the case on all of them. Is this a policy change with *A or LH (unlikely I'd say) or just a bug with the system? It would be great if LH were indeed dropping YQ!

(On a minor point, why does your example above quote "AF YQ surcharge"? Shouldn't it read LH? I checked ITA myself and I get a proper LH surcharge but of the same amount. Have you somehow selected a code-share or connection there? The amount seems to be the same anyway, which is strange.)

I won't complain Getting LH F availability outside of 14 days and not being charged the YQ, seems to be my lucky punch

I noticed it as well, I think it's a bug as it's clearly a LH fare and not AF, no codeshare or anything involved. When I searched for the fare before, I remember it displayed LH YQ correctly.

Unfortunately no. I don't think partner airline gets to redeem that unless it is in Y I am on the A330 for both flights.

Blantyre, Malawi to Sao Paulo via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian for 2 passengers. Aegean is a steal of a deal for this at only 45k + 29.54 taxes each.

Very difficult to get Ethiopian availability to show up on Aegean's website even if "I" class is actually available, but I finally figured out how to "force" it to show availability. Proceed to book for another date/another airline that has availability and then at the last step, change the date in the box at top right and UNCHECK the +/- 30 Days option. That should force it to show the actual availability on the day you want for all *A carriers.

The website initially rejected my Chase VISA card (Verified by Visa issues) but I was able to complete the payment via PayPal. Got a message that I needed to contact the call center, which I did and they advised it was a security precaution due to the original card being declined. 3 minutes later I had the e-tickets in email.

My redemption is very basic but the fees were low so I am pleased. Two economy tickets from Lyon, France (LYS) to Montreal, Canada (YUL) for 30000 points each and only 35.5 euros each. Total of 60000 and 71 euros. Flight is on Air Canada direct.

Travelled a couple of weeks back PVG-ZRH-MAN on LX in J. 55k miles and approx EUR36. First time long-haul J on Swiss, the seat a bit dated but the food was excellent. Air China lounge in Shanghai is a bit meh.
