Swissotel Zurich to close permanently

I didn’t find any English source, but Swiss media is reporting today that the Swissotel in Zurich is being closed permanently. The article says it was confirmed by Accor’s PR team.

Very sad news, it had a perfect location - even if with the 25hours and Moevenpicks we now have many other choices.

Was this the first Swissotel or a sort of flagship for the brand?

Indeed, very sad news. It had a convenient location for a short stay near ZRH, and had a very good panoramic swimming pool...

Amongst the first ones, yes. The hotel opened in 1972 as “Hotel International” and Swissotel took it over in 1980, the year the company was founded.

Flagship - not really, I guess because it is not really luxurious and does not have a prime location either. Swissotel itself lists the following as flagship properties: Swissôtel The Bosphorus in Istanbul, Swissôtel The Stamford in Singapore and Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy in Moscow

Unless the Stamford has had a huge makeover in the last couple of years it's definitely not a flagship. I prefer it to the Fairmont next door precisely because it is not 'above itself'.
