Novotel Ulaanbaatar

Introduction 6 night stay - Platinum Member Check In I checked in and was offered an upgraded room at check-in but decided to keep the Standard room that I had booked. Check-in was quick and the assistant was very friendly and I was given a drinks voucher and the room key. I did not have breakfast included for this stay but confirmed at check-in that I could have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant as a Platinum member (there is no lounge at this hotel). Room I had a standard room on the 15th Floor which had a great view towards Sukhbaatar Square. It had a hige window (almost floor to ceiling) and the window opened to allow for fresh air. For a standard room, it was very big and had a desk, sofa, coffee table a huge TV and decent sized bathroom. The shower was large. The selection of TV channels was enourmous. The room was not decorated to the "new" Novotel style (with the grey bathrooms...etc) - despite being a new Novotel. That said, the design of the room was modern and well maintained. The room had the usual temperature control panel. It also had a radiator which could be controlled seperately. Shortly after entering the room a large plate of sliced fruit was brought to the room. Service The staff were excellent. English varied between ok and excellent but I found that all staff I encountered were polite, keen and helpful. I found that staff were keen to interact with guests which was nice. I liked how when walking out of the hotel one morning the concierge chased after me and offered a city map. Dining The hotel had two restaurants, a cafe and a Biere House. Breakfast was served in one of the restaurants on the second floor. I thought the selection was very good - particuarly the selection and quality of hot items (Western and Asian). The choice of fruit and juice was a bit limited and the bread was a bit hard for my liking (I guess these things are harder to get in Mongolia in winter). The choice of hot drinks and tea was excellent and there was a choice of several cheeses as well. The bacon was amongst the best I've had in a hotel. Overall I thought breakfast was very good. The Biere House seemed to be popular with locals in the evening as well as guests and was quite lively for a hotel bar. Beer was cheap (about $2) as was the food (around $5-$10 for a main course). The portions were huge and the quality and selection was good. It is quite nice after being out in the cold all day to have a couple of beers here. Location The location is around a 5 minute walk to Sukhbaatar Square and about a 20 minute walk to the state department store. A lot of tourist sites in the city could be reached within a 30 minute walk from the hotel. The traffic in Ulaanbaatar is terrible so you are often just as well off walking. There is a small shopping centre with a cafe and supermarket on the same block as the hotel. Across the road there is a Mongolian chain restaurant (with an English menu) as well as many smaller cafes and restaurants.I think the location was good for a tourist (there are some hotels that are closer to Sukhbaatar Sq but this one was only a 5 minute walk away) Overall I was very satisfied with the stay. The room was modern and well appointed, the staff were great and the Biere House was one of the best hotel bars I've been to (the price and atmosphere thanks to being busier than most hotel bars made it a great place to relax for a while). I'd also add that it was great visiting Ulaanbaatar in winter. It was very cold but surely if you are going to visit the coldest capital city in the world you should do it in winter?
