Mercure Hotel Berlin Tempelhof

Name of the hotel: Mercure Hotel Berlin Tempelhof

What is your Le Club status? Gold

Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Very happy

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Booked a Standard room, received a double upgrade to a Privilege room

How are the rooms? Great! Privilege (and Superior) rooms are quite large (32+ sqm) and in great condition. Privilege rooms include bathrobes, slippers, a Nespresso machine, kettle, a fridge (not a minibar, just a fridge), a sofa and two armchairs, as well as two lounge chairs, and a desk.

What was good and what was bad?

Good: The size of the room. No view to speak of, but it was very quiet and that's more important. I liked having a fridge to store my items, especially as I didn't have breakfast at the hotel (quite pricey at 19 EUR). The room was very clean, the bathroom spotless. The staff were nice and friendly.

Bad: The location is not good for tourists and first time visitors, the connections to the centre are not that great. Even though there is a direct metro line to Alexanderplatz, you lose a lot of time on travelling. The location was convenient for me, however, as I knew we would be going out to a club a few hundred meters away and it was great not to have to wait for a train in the middle of the night but simply walk back to the hotel. This is not an attractive part of the city and even though I always felt safe, there were some unpleasant characters in the metro and in the nearest metro station.

Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? N/A

What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks? Welcome drink vouchers for 2, valid for wine, beer and soft drinks. Welcome amenity was a fruit platter. Nothing extraordinary, but nice.

Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? Great value! I booked it on a private sale and it was 63 EUR a night, which is a terrific price for the New Year's. I would return, I was treated very well.

Name of the hotel: Mercure Graz City

What is your ALL status? Gold

Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Very happy!

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Booked a standard room, upgraded to a Privilege room

How are the rooms? Fantastic! They were renovated a couple of years ago, but they still look and smell completely new. A bit of an "industrial feel", though, as there is no carpet in the room, just a concrete floor. Very generous amenities in the bathroom (including toothbrushes, shaving kits etc.), a huge TV with lots of channels, fantastic soundproofing, no noise whatsoever from the outside (or the inside for that matter). The room is spotless. One of the best Mercures I've been to. This was my third stay and the hotel is consistently fantastic.

What was good and what was bad?

Good: The room itself. Breakfast is great too with a huge spread. Parking garage underneath the hotel - 15 EUR per day. Nice staff.

Bad: Nothing, everything was perfect!

Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? No lounge

What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks? Welcome drink voucher for 2, valid for wine, beer and soft drinks. Welcome amenity is a bag of Manner Cubidoo chocolates, which I like very much.

Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? Booked during a Black Friday sale, so it was great value for money - just 70 EUR for 2 people including breakfast. I will definitely return.

Name of the hotel: Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien

What is your ALL status? Gold

Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? No

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Booked a Classic room, received the same as there were no available Privilege rooms (fair enough)

How are the rooms? Not good, I'm afraid. The Classic room is small and everything looks very tired and worn. The bathroom was freezing and on top of that there was no hot water in the evening. And the next morning there was no hot water in the shower.

What was good and what was bad?

Good: Breakfast was fantastic. Lots of options and even an egg station, which I don't see often in Mercure hotels. The location is good, withing walking distance of the city centre and close to the Landstrasse/Mitte station, which is where the train from the airport brings you.

Bad: The general condition of the hotel. Poor loyalty treatment.

Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? No lounge

What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks? Welcome drink for 2, valid for wine, beer and soft drinks. No welcome amenity.

Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? Not really, even if on sale. I won't return, no.

- Name of the hotel: Novotel Edinburgh Centre

- What is your ALL status? Gold

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? So-so, but only because of the bathroom

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Booked Standard, Double upgrade to Executive for both rooms booked.

- How are the rooms? Newly refurbished, but no real bathroom. Door directly into shower, another door directly into toilet. Basin in room. Nowhere to get changed, other than in the room. In made the room appear larger, but zero privacy. I find it hard to believe that the management sat down and decided that this was a good idea. They obviously do not share hotel rooms much.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good: Great location. 10 minutes walking distance to Royal Mile. Nice bar.

Bad: Bathroom.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? NA

- What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks? Mince pies and berries for both rooms. 2 x 2 drink vouchers.

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? Great value in the winter sale. Would only return if I was travelling alone due to the bathroom layout, which is a real shame.

Sounds a lot like Ibis Budget. I can't believe this is actually catching on.

For what I know, the new room layouts being rolled out come in a few flavours - there should be rooms with closed bathrooms available as well, though that would mean the room department didn't do a good job assigning rooms to you...

For all of the so-so stuff I can say about Viennesse hotels and service, breakfasts there are really good there. Most hotels will get you eggs made to request, though not necessarily cooked in open view. BTW, you can now take trains that will stop at a number of train stations in the city, including a lot of them taking you to the Hauptbahnhof. On that note - if you want a really impressive and value-for-money Mercure, go for the Mercure Raphael - if I could, I'd basically live there (in one of their top-floor rooms with a terrace facing the Theatre), and it might have actually been cheaper than my current living arrangements :D

Thanks JTCz. This was my first experience of the open bathroom concept at a Novotel, although I have stayed at a Flemings in Germany with a clear glass shower cubicle in the middle of the room!

In terms of choice, how is anyone supposed to know? All the rooms on the website show closed bathrooms and there is no way to select the type. Presumably, you book and then call? Personally I have never had to select a bathroom type in order to avoid something which IMHO is so badly designed. Just seems an example of 'style' of practicality to me.

We stayed at this hotel in 2018 and found the bathroom to be fine. I mean it was odd with the washing sink nearly sticking out in the middle of the room near the mini bar. For singles, couples or families i can't see this being a problem. The main thing is the total area given actually normal for the price you pay to stay at this hotel. I think some people are getting confused. Ibis budget has shared bathrooms I think with multiple rooms? This does not share the bathroom with any other room.

Not in my experience, no. In Ibis Budget hotels I've stayed at the set-up was the same as described above: no proper bathroom, a washbasin in the room, a shower cubicle in the middle of the room and a separate toilet. Nothing was shared with other rooms.

The shared bathroom hotel is the F1 in France.

Accor are bringing out some "hostel" type rooms in Budgets and F1, where you can have a bed for about 20€ or so. I have seen these in the Toulouse area .

- Name of the hotel:

Singapore Clarke Quay

- What is your ALL status?

Diamond.

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Yes.

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Standard. Upgraded to Premier Room - on premier floor (executive lounge floors).

- How are the rooms?

Good. Nice layout toward the Marina Bay. As always with this hotel something (or many things) in the room don't work well. E.g. no pressure in water, or some lights don't work, or air-con is not really working. I have stayed here over 30 times and its always something. Just a little old.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good: View, and executive lounge standout. Staff work hard to make things right.

Bad: Rooms a bit dated and generally have problems with them.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?

Yes. Staff are excellent. Selections at evening tapas limited and quite busy now (used to be much quieter).

- What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks?

Don't bother me as I use lounge. But I get some but rarely use.

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?

Good. Getting more expensive and thus less value for money. Hear its closing down and changing brands at some point but which will be a shame.
