Survey: Can Fairmont Gift Cards be used for PrePaid reservations
I am noticing a heavily discounted hotel rate at an international Fairmont destination.
It is non-refundable (no surprise there) but also requires upfront prepayment..
Now we have the Gift card sale this coming Friday afternoon.
The question is whether one can prepay now- go to the hotel in a few months, use the discounted gift cards, and then get credit back for the original prepayment as a credit.
I called the L'Accor/Fairmont reservations desk - I asked if there was there a central Fairmont (L'Accor) policy on this issue. The answer was no.
I was told that it is up to each hotel to decide if the they would allow GCs as payment during a prepaid stay, whereby the original amount would be credited.
So the survey question is your experience in this situation - for a given Fairmont Hotel.

Why not just send an e-mail to the hotel you plan to stay at?
The Chateau Whistler requires all bookings during high winter season to be prepaid in full ~14 days in advance of the stay. However, they have always refunded the prepayment to my credit card upon checkout when I go to apply gift cards.

I never had a problem getting a refund on my credit card for pre-paid rates when using gift cards. For sure it was done in Montreux, Southampton (Bermuda), and Mont Tremblant. And from memory, I think it was also done in Chengdu, Istanbul, and Amman.

The L'Accor/Fairmont desk in Moncton NB (for North American callers) stated that it is up to each Fairmont hotel to decide if the gift card will or will not be accepted on a pre-paid reservation. I am wondering which hotels will NOT accept the gift cards in these circumstances.
I was personally wondering about the Fairmont in Barcelona Spain.

If you get confirmation from Fairmont Barcelona please report back because I have a trip there coming up in July and I have narrowed down my choices to Fairmont or Hotel Sofia (Unbound Collection Hyatt) and if I go to Fairmont I intend to use gift cards.

Sounds like our common wisdom on FT is that lots of properties have accepted, and so far none that we know has refused.

While it may or may not be true that each property can decide whether it allows the use of gift cards when having booked a pre-paid rate, I have yet to encounter - or even hear of - a hotel that doesn't.

Something to watch for! At the Fairmont San Francisco on Sunday, night before check-out, went to the desk and paid my account to zero with an electronic gift card. Then went to print my boarding passes for my flight the next day. On my way back, I was flagged down by another agent at the front desk (not the agent that I had just dealt with) who said they accidentally redeemed the whole gift card. When I looked at the receipt I had asked the first agent if they had redeemed the whole thing and she said no, it just means it is in the process of updating. I guess not! They issued me a new plastic gift card for the balance.
