I couldn't find a thread for either hotel in Hoi An - the Hotel Royal or the Mercure. It would seem the latter may be exiting its agreement with Accor, as it is not bookable from 1st March onwards. I'd appreciate any insight on either hotel. Thanks!

Mercure is closing for major refurbishment I heard - meant to reopen next year still under Mercure brand :)

At what beach(es) in Hoi An did you spend most of your time?

I was at very reasonably priced Vinh Hung Emerald Resort for a few days, with an overnight side trip to Hue. It was in early September and super hot and humid.

The thing about Da Nang is, that the US had a large air base there during the war, which has now been converted into a commercial airport. One can fly there on regional carriers (eg. from HK) for dirt cheap.

We loved it as well. We went in month of May, in beach weather and it was amazing. All the tourists leave the beach near sunset and the locals hit it. That's when the real fun starts. We ended up making facebook friends with a whole farming family, sharing some food and beer and homemade rice wine, and regularly keep in touch. The city itself is just stunning as well. One of very few places I would visit a second time.

An Bang beach I think it was called. Yeah, we flew from Da Nang to HCM at the end of our trip there after taking a train from Hanoi to Hue. We were there in May I think it was. Weather was great, if a bit hot and humid.

Update April 2023

- Name of the hotel: Pullman Danang Beach Resort

- What is your ALL status? Diamond

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Very very happy!

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? One category upgrade from Bay view Deluxe room to Junior Suite

- How are the rooms? Junior Suite is fantastic! Quite large (over 70 sqm), with a huge bathroom, which is almost as large as the bedroom/living room. There is a jacuzzi in the bathroom. Bathroom amenities by CO Bigelow in large dispensers. The room was spotless, everything was in great condition, no signs of wear and tear whatsoever. There is a balcony with two chairs, as well as a large terrace with a big table for 6 people. It was such a pleasure to sit there in the evening, with the sound of waves in the distance. Perfectly quiet at night.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:
- The staff! Incredibly nice and genuine people, all of them! A wonderful receptionist checked us in and then the following day, when I wanted to order extra pillows from the pillow menu, I ran into her in the lobby and she said she would have the pillows sent to the room and she knew our room number! The staff at the Infinity bar, the beach, the restaurants... incredible people!
- Breakfast - without a doubt the best breakfast spread I have ever seen in my life! Asian dishes different every morning. They even served crab on one morning! Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese dishes... you name it, they've got them. Naturally, all of the Western dishes too. As well as all the ingredients to mix yourself a Bloody Mary! How cool is that?!
- Great restaurant at the beach, we ate there several times and the seafood was amazing!
- A bar at the beach with a happy hour, everything at 50% from 5 to 7, if I remember correctly.
- The resort isn't huge, but everything is well maintained, the grass is cut and plants watered regularly. Everything looks wonderful.
- Great sandy beach, with enough loungers, hammocks etc and a children's playground.
- Beautiful spa, treatments not too expensive (for a 5 star hotel)

Bad: not a single thing!

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? No lounge

- What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks? Great loyalty treatment. Welcome drink voucher for 2 valid for everything I think, welcome amenity was waiting in the room: some snacks, fruit and beautiful yellow roses. Complimentary breakfast, naturally. I was thanked for my loyalty by the wonderful receptionist several times. Complimentary airport transfer.

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? I would return in a heartbeat, I loved it so much, it was one of the best hotel experiences for me!

Too bad it doesn't have an executive lounge :-(

Perhaps the Hotel Royal-MGallery in Hoi An might be more interesting place to stay do you reckon?

Stayed in both Pullman Da Nang and Hotel Royal-MGallery. Really liked Hotel Royal-MGallery and found it a wonderful boutique hotel within walking distance to the old town of Hoi An but not smack in it. Pullman Da Nang was nice too but not as memorable for me.

Hotel Royal-MGallery It's a nice five minute walk along the canal. Plus they have free bikes, and an Executive Lounge :-)

I didn't even realize it had a lounge!
