Novotel London Canary Wharf

IMG_4049.jpg

This hotel was long awaited in the business district of Canary Wharf and its opening has been delayed several times. I wanted to stay there last december, but opening was delayed. It was reported in our favourite forum in february that the hotel finally opened. I had to go to London for a business trip to Canary Wharf and I was originally supposed to come back in the evening, but in the morning, I learned that I had to change plans and overnight in London. So I thought this was a good occasion to try the new Novotel. (they opened mid-february) I was already a-on-board my flight to LHR and I tried to book through the I-phone Accor app. It was impossible to log-in and so tried to book on the desktop site. It was very buggy and finally managed to complete the booking after many efforts just before I had to disconnect all electronc devices. I have to say I was worrying that the booking didn’t go through, but it turned out OK. Hmm Accor IT… ;-)

Check In

I checked-in before my meeting around 12. The lobby is not very big but very modern and warm. I was clearly expected by the staff. I have to say, apart my beloved Sofitel Angkor in Cambodia, I have never been as nicely welcomed in a hotel. Staff is young (in their 30’s) of course British but with many French people and from other countries. So I was constantly switching from English to French and vice-versa and that was really nice, all  in a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. This is one of the rare hotel where the slogan « Feel welcome » means really something (I was feeling like staying with family & friends). Check-in was done with i-pad and not behind a traditional counter. I was immediately welcomed as a Platinum member as soon as I gave my name. I had booked a Superior room and I was told I was upgraded to the upper category (I forgot the name). Drink voucher was given and Club lounge access was granted.

IMG_4001.jpgIMG_3998.jpgIMG_3999.jpg

A lady in charge of guests relations showed up and asked me if I have time to have a quick introduction and presentation of the hotel. Guess what my answer was ;-)

It was obvious that all the staff was very proud and happy to work here. The hotel is still in soft opening mode (approx half of the floors are open)

There is a club lounge on the 1st floor. At the moment, you can have simple breakfast there (cereals, bread, juice, coffee), and soft drinks all day long. There will be free evening cocktails in this lounge in about a month from now (until that, you can have free cocktails in the main bar on the 39th floor from 6 to 8 pm). Unfortunately, I missed that, as my nearby meeting ended too late. This lounge is more than welcome as this is way too rare in Europe. She explained me about the bar & restaurants and then escorted me to my room on the 26th floor.

Room

The room and bathroom were very nice, far from the cold typical Novotel design that I dislike more and more. And the view on downtown London was stunning. Very comfy bed.

You can take your shower with the London view. And if you want privacy, you just press a button and in one second it’s done !!

The meeting rooms are also of a very special style, very different from what you usually see in other hotels. I have to say I like it (warm atmosphere).

Dining

On the top floors there are a bar, terrace and restaurant with stunning views as well. I asked the staff to book me a table for dinner for me and my colleagues (who were staying in another nearby hotel). I was told that it would have to be confrmed as it was very busy. I told them kindly that I rely on them to find me a table which they did ;-)

The restaurant was indeed full  (as well as the bar) and we had a great meal with a wonderful view. I was impressed, as the hotel was only opened for 2 weeks when I was there.  I used my drink voucher at the bar after the dinner. I asked the waiter what can I have with the voucher. She said she will ask and she came back saying «  I asked my manager and he said you can have whatever you want from the drink menu ». Super. I opted for a glass of Champagne rosé which was kindly bring. TBH, I don't think this will be the regular treatment in the future (I think they have just been super nice with me for whatever reason)

Suites

After a good night, I took a rapid BF at the lounge and had a nice discussion with my guest relations persons who took care of me the day before and we talked a lot about the hotel and LCAH. She introduced me to her boss and also later on to the GM whom we met in the lift. I asked her whether it would be possible to see the suites and she was happy to show 2 suites to me (which are still not sold yet at they are on floors where construction is still going on). You can see, they are lovely, especially the 2nd one (the 1st one is on a low floor and so is lacking a nice view, but the room itself is nice).

1st suite

Overall

Overall, an excellent stay. I am not a big fan anymore of the Novotel brand because I feel « cold » , but I loved this one and let’s hope it will be  model for the future ones. A long awaited Accor presence in canary Wharf.  And if you don’t stay there (or live in London), you can also just go to the bar and restaurant. You won’t regret it.

This is VERY nice Goldorak

Being the forever optimist, I think there is a reason for the "for whatever reason"

Finally Accor has started using earlier this year a system I think they call E-Profile.

A number of properties are already logged into this system and taking a cue from Fairmont, they are starting to capture details of guests.
It also places a certain 'value' to guests.

I am noticing this also during my current stay (although there may be some other reasons in play here which I will elaborate in a week or two when I am back home).

Anyway, with the E-Profile as well as JP we should start seeing drastic changes and I remain very optimistic on this.

Lovely review Goldorak ^ It certainly looks nice, especially for a Novotel. Odd how they have a lounge there but not at a new built Sofitel, for example in Frankfurt.

Agreed and so this is very interesting news (like you I tend to stay on the optimistic side of the force )
I can't wait to learn more from you my friend !

Very strange indeed. Like also the Sofitel Berlin Krfsrtendamm which renovated and extended their lounge, but still keep it small and so they can continue to deny access to platinums. Many Accor hotels do not realize that a club lounge is a competitive advantage (and so bring value and revenues) and is not only a cost center.

True, but this is London and Canary Wharf. Hotel rates are completely crazy there and hotels are regularly fully booked. I had a rate of 242.

As our planned booking is in October we would be hoping we get an opportunity to book with a 30-40% sale as it is slightly higher than most novotel's in London but it seems worth it.

Also I asked them if they have any upper limits on upgrading between say suites. I was personally thinking booking the 4-7 floor suite in the hope of getting the 32-33rd floor suite as an upgrade either that or just book a deluxe room and get put into their executive rooms high up. Anyway I asked see what happens.

Thanks for the review. I've never been interested in staying at Novotel but the new hotel in Canary Wharf looks very attractive, different to other hotels. I like how the design with chains and ropes reflects history of the area, former harbor. Did you ask what are they serving in the lounge during evening cocktails, also snacks or just drinks? Pity that the lounge isn't on top of the hotel.

Thanks for the detailed review. This looks like a great addition to the Novotel family and going towards a good direction. I have a stay in London in August, I might book this hotel to try it out.

No, sorry I didn't ask and you know, they were still in soft opening mode. But I am sure they will serve some snacks as well (this is just my opinion, but I believe this is true in all lounges).

I have an upcoming trip to London. This new Novotel in Canary Wharf area is one of the options I'm considering to stay at but not sure if I do it any longer.

I contacted the hotel requesting details about the platinum benefits and received this, pretty disappointing reply:

On top of your rate benefits and also your standard benefits such as complimentary early check in and late check out (subject to availability) and also your welcome drink, we are proud to present our exclusive and new le club lounge, a dedicated outlet only for members. You may be pleased to know that your membership entitles you to enjoy all our facilities at our le club lounge free of charge, such as afternoon treats and evening canapes.

After I received the reply by email, I called the hotel requesting further details. I was told that Le Club lounge welcomes all Le Club members and not solely platinum members which I think is weird. I was also told that the evening canaps includes wines but the customer service representative wasn’t aware of any other possible spirits. Also, breakfast isn't served in the lounge so platinum members need to pay for it.

There are cold breakfast options served in the lounge. If you look for a full buffet breakfast, then no it has to be in the main restaurant.
Frankly, you should give it a try. This the best Novotel I have stayed in and the staff is just great. And they treat Platinum members very well.

2nd stay and another great great experience !! (15 Photos)

Novotel London Canary Wharf

This is the review for my 2nd and excellent stay in this great hotel. This time I bring my colleagues here and they loved it too. The hotel is now fully open and, having spoken with the staff, the occupancy rate is very high so they are very happy (although I heard it is creating sometimes a few problems for the breakfast at peak times).

Great welcome and Platinum treatment. I booked a deluxe double room and was upgraded to a lovely Executive suite, so it means a triple upgrade (not bad, isnt'it ?). As I already made a full review for the 1st stay, I will focus on the specifics of this 2nd stay.

Unfortunately, as we arrived after 8 pm, I couldn't try the lounge this time (they were supposed to introduce evening cocktails since my last visit). I got the drink voucher and the detailed welcome letter was in the room with some chocolate cakes.

IMG_5414.JPGIMG_5415.JPG

Room

The executive suite was the same as the 2nd one I shown in my 1st review, but staying in was very nice (last time was just taking picture and the room was not even proposed for sale during my 1st stay - hotel in soft opening mode). It was on the 34th floor. Very comfortable and quiet. Among provided amenities, I can cite :

- Bluetooth speaker (working very well).

- bathrobe

- slippers

good selection of drinks in the minibar, including complimentary mineral water.

You can appreciate once again the great view over London from the room (same view from the bar & restaurant).

IMG_5396.JPGIMG_5395.JPGIMG_5397.JPGIMG_5403.JPGIMG_5398.JPGIMG_5399.JPGIMG_5400.JPGIMG_5401.JPGIMG_5402.JPGIMG_5412.JPGIMG_5413.JPG

If I had to make one criticism, it will be for the bathroom : way too small for a suite of that category and there is 0 space to put your toiletry items. But OK I have survived this ;-)

There is a separate toilet in the living room area.

Dining

We had once again dinner at the excellent Bokan restaurant (advanced reservation highly recommended). We took the degustation menu, which was fantastic value for money (5 courses, £60). It was just top notch, and coming from a French person having a meal in UK, it tells a lot...ah ah ah :-))

IMG_5410.JPGIMG_5411.JPG

We used our drink vouchers at the bar before dinner. This time I had no champagne, but the house wine was quite good. The bar was very busy too

Overall

Now that the hotel is fully open, I confirm it is still a very nice Accor place to stay in London, and they treat Platinums (and likely other Elites and non-members) very well. We should send them many French Accor hotels owners for a several day training ! They seem to do very good business since the opening and they deserve it.

Thank you to all the team in Novotel Canary Wharf for everything. You do a great job !

Thanks for the latest review. It really looks good but it's slightly disappointing that you can't get a proper English Breakfast in the lounge (even if it was made to order it wouldn't be difficult).

I really considered staying here this summer but the price couldn't justify it. It's over double the Novotel London West, for example, at around 520GBP for 2 nights around my dates. I got the other hotel for 215GBP with breakfast and an Executive room.

I hope the prices come down - maybe it's because not all floors are open yet so they're only offering Platinum rates. We'll see.

Thanks for both reviews Goldorak, did you have the chance to try breakfast? Do they offer anything in the lounge? When booking an executive room and on your welcome letter it only mentions complimentary drinks and canaps from 6pm to 8pm, nothing about breakfast.

I have my first stay here next month, it seems to be a quiet weekend (rates from 120/night)

Thanks, Goldorak, for your second review. Seems like you had a great stay again. These two reviews have set my expectation high. I decided to try the hotel later this summer. The wording about lounge in the welcome letter isn't particular clear. Is there a separated executive lounge on top of that Le Club lounge where any Le Club members have access? How does the selection there differ from Le Club lounge? Very confusing.
