As we don't know which threads you looked at, it's hard for us to tell if you missed anything ;)
I stayed very recently at the Kurfürstendamm one and had a good stay. I never stayed at the other one (Gendarmenmarkt), but its location is nice too.
Very close to the Sofitel Kurfürstendamm, you have also the Pullman Schweizerhöf (an ex-Sofitel) which is nice too.

What are you planning to do in Berlin? Many of the tourist sights are in walking distance from Gendarmenmarkt, much better location...
