Excellent hotel with an impressive attention to details (2 Photos)

Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit

This was my first time in Bangkok, so in this hotel as well. I was staying 4 nights for leisure, with the goal to do sight-seeing.

I choose this hotel for various reasons, mainly it had a good rate for a Deluxe Room and the location. I had no regrets and a really pleasant stay.

Check In

I arrived and was expected, as one of manager contacted me the week before to ask for my arrival time.

I was escorted to the Executive Lounge when one agent took my passport to take care of the check-in while I was brought a fresh cold wet towel and a drink.

It took no more than a couple of minutes and I had my key in my hands. As a Platinium member of LCAH, I was upgraded to an Executive Deluxe room. I was also given:

- A voucher for a free drink

- A voucher for a free 15 minutes back and shoulder massage

- 4 vouchers for various rebates (15 to 30%) for the four F&B outlets in the hotel. Note that the rebate is applied before sales tax and the 10% service fee.

- The list of platinium benefits, which included one piece of Laundry for the stay

I was then escorted to my room.

Room

The room was spacious, on high floor with city view (although between the rain and the smog, I did not see that much).

The room did not look dated or worm, and I was impressed by the attention to details, such as the box with pen and paper clips, or the extra amenities in the bathroom (dental kit, ...).

A coffee machine with three capsules was near the desk, and two bottles of water were provided as part of the room. They were changed every day. Plus I had two bottles of water as Platinium member, plus two bottles of water for the bathroom. I was not going to be dehydrated.

The bed was comfortable, as expected for a Pullman.

Service

The service was excellent, with the staff anticipating your need. For example I travel with my own pillow. Without my asking, they fitted one of their clean pillow case on it and cleaned mine. The breakfast staff was truly excellent.

I can not comment too much on the food in the lounge as I did not partake.

Location

The location was good, very close to both the BTS and the MRT, so an easy access to several parts of the city. It is quite closed to the BKK airport (without trafic it does not take more than 25 minutes drive). As noted the traffic around is very heavy.

Overall

This is a very good and solid 5-star hotel in Bangkok, conveniently located, with a well trained staff and very good rooms. I would not hesitate to go back there if I find myself in Bangkok in the future.

Dining

The breakfast buffet was good, with a large spread and quality ingredients. I particularly like the fruit juice station doing two different juices every day. The snack place in the lobby had good comfort food (the salmon salad was great, as well as the Pad Thai).

Excellent hotel with an impressive attention to details

The Hotel opened again this month and since then the reviews are terrible. Long lines at checkin and no rooms availible bcs of less staff to get them ready and pool/gym not really working. A friend was booked there and at checkin they told him to wait several hours or move to the Novotel Ploenchit. I told him to ask for moving to the Sofitel because of both five star Accor hotels but he was willing to wait for a room.

thanks for the warning
I stayed in around 10 hotels in Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Hua Hin, Chumphon) during March and April. some with very pleasant and few with miserable experience...
I stayed pre-covid at the Novotel Ploenchit; it is not so bad, in particular lounge on roof top...but it's of course not on the level of a Pullman or even better Sofitel

I stayed here a week. They clearly had some problems restarting, based on the reviews.

On the positive side, the rooms here are quite nice. Much better than a Novotel or the Grand Mercure; closer to Sofitel, I would say. The lounge is open (5 to 7). I didn't have any problems getting a room and I'm not seeing long lines down there. The re-opening price was fantastic. The negative reviews on tripadvisor seem a bit overdone and not representative.

On the negative side, they have some lingering service issues. I had to call them 4 times about the same toilet problem. The toilets there are very weak and will clog if you put toilet paper in them. I also called because the AC thermostat wasn't working. They said "fixed" but it wasn't. I gave up on that one; now I just manually turn it on and off in a one hour cycle. The worst part to me is that they are defensive and entirely unapologetic. They don't follow up or appear to care. In general, the staff don't seem happy. One time I checked in, they didn't acknowledge my status. The lounge food is at the level of a Mercure or a Courtyard, not close to Ren, MR, Hyatt, etc. (which is fair given the price I paid, but don't set your expectations too high). It's not open outside 5-7, even for softdrinks. It's usually fairly empty, but one night it was busy and they ran out of food by 6 PM, and didn't replenish it. Issues like that happen again and again here. Admittedly, they are "first world problems."

Even worse still, they haven't posted points/nights, even from stays almost a month ago, and even after it was pointed out to them. Again, entirely unapologetic.

Some will like the breakfast because they have fresh coconuts and fresh-squeezed fruits and a good selection of fresh bread. It's not a bad spread. But it's not a good fit for me because they never have any lunch-type dishes with meat, like basil chicken or chicken curry. The meat slices look cheap (processed). The overall food selection doesn't vary much day to day.

I have some future nights booked at $31. Despite the rate and free breakfast and free lounge access, I am debating cancelling them for somewhere else. It's a frustrating hotel, but that is still a great price. At the new price of $50+, though, I'm staying elsewhere, unless they somehow dramatically turn things around.

Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit = Nice Suite but Soft Product Lacking

Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit = Nice Suite but Soft Product Lacking (19 Photos)

Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit

I had a reservation at the newly rebranded Novotel Suites Sukhumvit 39 (it used to be independent and recently joined Accor) and when I arrived at noon I was told that the standard check-in time was 2pm and that no room was available because they were full the night before.  They were also oversold for that night and they had to send guests to other hotels, when they saw my Diamond status they offered me to wait a couple of hours for a room or be transferred for the same price at Pullman Grande Sukhumvit and they would drive me there with the hotel tuk-tuk.  Since that Pullman was the last remaining of the 9 full-service Accor hotels in Bangkok I had not tried before (BanyanTree, Sofitel, SO, Swissotel, 2 MGallery, and 3 Pullman), I took the offer.  Pullman is more expensive than Novotel 39 so it was not a case of a stingy hotel trying to downgrade me; it was a generous offer.

Upon arrival at Pullman I was told I was upgraded as Accor Diamond to an executive room which are the same size as entry level but are on the hotel’s highest floors.  I asked what upgrades do Platinums receive and it’s the same.  My response to them was that it makes this Pullman somewhat of a poor fit for Diamond guests because an upgrade to simply a higher floor is not much to write home about.  Without me pushing much, they then changed my room assignment to a suite which was appreciated.

Room

The suite reminded me the most of Pullman King Power in terms of layout, the fact that it was entirely hardwood floors which was great, there was 1.5 bath which is convenient and had some Japanese toilet features in both bathrooms.  If I could reliably receive suite upgrades at this Pullman upon availability, I might stay more often because it was a very solid suite for what is normally the price tag of this hotel.  One minor surprise was for bathroom toiletries they used the same cheap unbranded stuff as what I noticed at Novotel Ploenchit a couple of weeks prior.  I find it less appropriate for a Pullman to do so than a Novotel, and in the suites no less.

For the rest of the hardware I do not have negative comments in fact I also liked the hotel design in the hallways leading to the rooms, although one minor downside of such open-air concept was that it felt quite hot as soon as I stepped out of the room.

Dining

This Pullman has a lounge but it was closed during the mornings and afternoons.  For me a lounge is not only somewhere to have happy hour, it’s also a venue which can be used for work or for a more relaxed version of breakfast when the restaurant is busy.

Happy hour was ok, it was not memorable but I would not say it was poor.  Regarding drinks I wish they had more cocktails but at least they offered Mojitos unlike some lounges which have none.

1_IMG_3796.jpeg1_IMG_3797.jpeg3_IMG_3798.jpeg2_IMG_3799.jpeg

Breakfast was quite weak for Pullman standards in a city like Bangkok – I have been to Novotels with better breakfasts.  For example there was no hot dish with protein such as chicken or shrimps and the fried rice was vegetarian only.  The only positive about breakfast was that they had coconut water available but for food it was not impressive and the restaurant itself was fairly crowded and not particularly enjoyable.

3_IMG_3801.jpeg2_IMG_3802.jpeg2_IMG_3803.jpeg

The Accor welcome drink voucher could be used in the hotel bar, but the bar did not open until 5pm which is the start time of happy hour in the lounge.  That combined with the lounge being closed in the afternoon, I found the timing to be inconvenient; I sometimes like to use the voucher early but it was not possible at Pullman.

Service

Service was mixed; in the lounge the service was good in part because it was not very crowded, but during breakfast there was nobody at the entrance of the restaurant.  I waited a while but because nobody came, I eventually simply took one of the few tables available rather than wait for them to confirm that my breakfast was included.  Also during the stay I called to ask for a shaving kit to be brought to my room but nobody ever came.

Wifi

Another problem with the soft product at this hotel: wifi was unstable.  At times it worked well with speeds of about 50 Mbps but other times the download speed was less than 2 Mpbs and upload barely usable below 1 Mbps.

Overall

Overall my stay had some good points and some weak points.  I will not be against returning but in this price range it’s a very crowded competitive landscape in Bangkok so it takes a lot to stand out.  The room itself set Pullman apart but I would need more confidence in the reliability of suite upgrades if I became a return guest in order for me to find value at this hotel to make up for the other points which are not up to par.

Sorely disappointed

I have been a repeat guest at Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit annually since 2016, and am an Accor ALL Platinum member. Previous stays were pleasant and make me choose this hotel everytime I visit Bangkok.

My recent stay in Sep 2022 left much to be desired and I was left sorely disappointed. I have booked a suite room for 3d2n.

Check in:
1. No check-in or check-out service at Executive Lounge.
2. Missing welcome drink coupon, which is a basic even for Silver members. I had to reach out and ask for one.
3. Was assigned a room on 11th floor, despite my high floor preference (in previous stays I had been assigned to either 21st or executive floors) . When I asked the duty manager, as an Accor ALL Platinum member, shouldn't I be entitled to a complimentary room upgrade, I was told the suite is the highest category. The hotel made no effort to allocate a higher floor or executive floor.

Stay:
4. Executive lounge operates for only 2 hours a day during social hour. Only 1 staff was present and despite being so busy, she maintained a great sense of hospitality.
5. InBlu lounge again staffed by a single waitress.
6. Gym room on Level 7's air conditioning is not functioning properly. The spa remains closed. Someone left a half empty cup of coffee at the spa table, and I have seen the same cup for 2 days.
7. Suite looked tired and sofa, charis etc had stains on them.
8. Toiletries have changed from the usual Pullman's CO Bigelow to a nameless product.

Check out:
8. Staff at counter was more interested in messaging on his line app then attending to a check out. No effort was made to ask how my stay was.
9. When I asked for a copy of the invoice, I was given a printed copy and he placed an envelope by the side so that "I can put it in myself". Back to texting on Line app again.

In general, the hotel seems to be severely understaffed, with cut backs affecting the quality of service. Hard product and service unbefitting of a Pullman brand and 5 star hotel.

Sad to see the hotel degenerate into thsi state.

It's becoming a Hilton I think. But I am not sure about the 31 DEC date because we can still book Pullman under Accor in January, but not on Hilton's website (yet).

you saying that Hilton's IT systems are just as bad as Accor's? In any case they are on their way out.

no loss with so many Accor properties within walking distance and the first Fairmont in Thailand coming, which will be just around the corner....
