I'm coming in a bit late I know, but figured I'd add my 2 cents worth.
I stayed at the Sofitel Silom a short while ago on the Club Level. The rooms were nice, and everything was fine, but I was somewhat underwhelmed. The food selection was okay, but nowhere near the level of other Sofitel Club lounges I've stayed in. Added to this, the wireless was hopeless, and couldnt be used in my room.
My preferred hotel is the Novotel Fenix Ploenchit. Prices are cheaper than the Sofitel Silom, the service is excellent, and the Club Lounge is great, with an open air rooftop patio that gives amazing views. The service is top notch, and I usually receive complimentary late checkout and other perks as well. The hotel is less than a year old so everything is in great shape.
It has an MRT right out front of the hotel (literally) and MBK/Siam Paragon is about a 10-15 minute walk away (or a 3 minute ride on the MRT). This is my standard hotel whenever I'm in Bangkok (4-5 times a year).
Just thought I'd chime in

Did a tour today around the new Sofitel Sukhumvit situated between Asoke and Nana bts. Hotel is currently in the soft opening phase. I can say that even the entry level room was modern and had that luxorious feeling. Bathroom had a separate shower cubicle and toilet cubicle and there was a bathtub also. I would say that the room was a bit small for two persons but perfect for one. Service was professional and polite right from the front door and the lady who was my "tour guide" was absolutely lovely. I asked to see the club rooms and suites but they weren't ready yet. Hotel is due to be fully operational next month.

I've just checked into Sofitel Sukhumvit. Forget about whatever lingering fondness you might have for the erstwhile Sofitel Silom. If it's of any comfort for one to know, most of the staff are former Sofitel Silom. This is the classiest Sofitel I've been yet. So glad I didn't go for the so-chic-it-hurts Sofitel So.

Upgrade of room category wasn't granted as they're fully booked. I didn't care to check if it's true, as long as I got my complementary lounge access. I booked the Deluxe room which was really well appointed. Drink coupon was given which was extended to my friend who drove me there, so it's nice. Was escorted by the reception lady to the room. A plate of macarons was placed in the room already. Still out for dinner now. Will update later.

I just book an executive room - the rates are great. I'll be staying here 3-4 times a year (only stayed twice so far) so hopefully I'll be able to build a good rapport with staff.
