Thumbs up Gold Floor Review

All of the points Jasper2009 has mentioned are true. Now for the experience

I had booked our normal corporate rate and emailed in advance my interest in an paid upgrade to one of the sales managers I know at the property. Offered and accepted $100 CAD upcharge. All very efficient and professional.

Arrived in time for evening hors d'oeuvre. Nice selection. I settled for a glass of wine and cheeses. I did not want to spoil dinner

I asked for a quick tour of one of the 1br suites, which was done on the spot. The room furnishings are well done and I liked the way the showers were
redone. The bedroom in the suite was a bit smaller than most 1BR suites I have seen at Fairmonts, but the living room was more than adequate.

One of the new amenities was lip balm, exclusive for the moment to the Mac. Useful when an Alberta Clipper is blowing full bore.

I had a large corner King and it had great views of the river. One of the nicest king rooms I have had in a Fairmont in a while. Ask for 701.

The Gold Floor has a true concierge who was new to the Mac, but evidently very experienced. I had packages for a trade show the next day where they were able to have one of the bellmen have the house car scheduled to deliver the packages and me to the Shaw Conference Center with near military precision. Great service execution there. ^

I had a light dinner in the lounge and it is a nice touch that staff remembered me from my last visit.

Overall, a great, always too short visit to the Mac, one of my favorites in the Fairmont family. The staff was genuinely welcoming and the service impeccable throughout.

I'll be back in December and curious to see the Christmas decor.

Thanks for the report!^

Happy to hear you had a nice stay. I agree - the service usually is excellent and one of the reasons I've spent many nights at this hotel.

Staying on the 7th floor for the past 3 nights, in the 8th floor tonight. I needed a room on gold with two beds and the only standard gold room with 2 queens is 812.

It's big, the showers are nice (water pressure isn't great but I really prefer a strong shower), nespresso machines in room, nice turndown service, and the lounge food is pretty decent. Had breakfast and canapés every day and I can't complain. I really wish Gold rooms didn't nickel and dime you with the minibar sodas or confectionaries since they are included if you grab some from the lounge. Kind of stupid to have $7 Evians in room when they are providing free bottled water all day long in room. The bose wave II is pretty swank too but while I can figure out how to connect to bluetooth, the average guest would give up.

Didn't use the honour bar but for those who are dishonourable among us it isn't policed at all. I'd consider the alcohols mid tier offerings (Walker Double Black, Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire, etc). Well stocked with sodas, water, juice, tea/coffee. Outside of breakfast and canapés there are cookies, chips, chocolates, confectionaries (currently they have sour pumpkins which are amazing). Regular lounge deserts are out during canapé hours too.

The concierge staff are friendly for the most part. On Saturday I had a poor experience with the male concierge but I didn't see him upstairs again. He was working the front desk downstairs. It was embarrassing to say the least when I think back about how he spoke down to me. I requested the General Manager's business card and will follow up with his office during the week.

Otherwise I've been thrilled on the Gold floor. Service is superior to the regular hotel and rooms are nicer. New beds too which are way more supportive. Week before last I stayed in 642 and the beds felt like they needed to be thrown out 5 years ago.

I had a chance to get a tour of the Gold floor and thought I'd share some impressions:

1) the Gold floor is located on the 7th floor and the lounge is located opposite of the elevators (I believe 3-4 rooms were converted into the Gold lounge)
2) the Gold floor only has 33 rooms, so service should be excellent
3) all guests staying in the speciality suites located on the 8th floor get access to the Gold lounge
4) the Gold floor features the usual amenities such as a deluxe continental breakfast (incl. 2-3 hot items each day), evening canapes and an honor bar
5) all the rooms on the Gold floor have been renovated and could be described as "classic elegance" - furniture is new, but at the same time consistent with the 100 year old history of the hotel
6) the layout of the various Gold rooms differs slighty, but all the rooms I saw were spacious and well-appointed with armchairs and/or sofas
7) the bathrooms have been fully refurbished and now have a large, walk-in shower (instead of the bathtub/shower combo); a few rooms also have a soaker bathtub

Overall, it seems like the hotel did a great job with the Gold floor (and I hope to stay there during one of my future stays).

Hm, I seem to recall the Fairmont Macdonald running a promotion this fall/winter where guests get a x% discount on their total invoice if they post a photo on the hotel's FB site or something along those lines.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about / have a link by chance?

We are also celebrating by using the Hashtag #StayHerePlayThere with a picture enjoying your stay at the hotel and a picture enjoying an event or service at Ice District and receive 15% off your entire hotel bill at check out with proof of the social media post.

Thanks for the fast response!^

So if I read this correctly I'd get 15% off my entire bill for making a post that includes:
1. a photo of how I enjoy the Hotel Macdonald
2. a photo of how I enjoy a service at the Ice District
3. include the hashtag in my post

But there's no requirement for me to be in the photo and this works for any rate?

I've never used it, but that is how I read it as well.

Signature Room- 6th floor

I'm planning a stay here next week in the Signature Room. Does anyone know if the room is one of the renovated ones?

I'd ask the hotel directly.

If they say, no ask for alternatives. I won't be back until later in April, so I cannot give an exact answer.

If you can upgrade to the Gold Floor, I can recommend it. Excellent staff and the location/views/amenities are all solid.

The signature room ended up being a nicer deluxe room on a higher floor with a view of the river valley.

I believe the hotel is slated to go for renos in the near future, at this point only the Gold Floor has refreshed rooms.

They better, because as soon as the JW Marriott finishes (18 months-ish?), they are toast.
