i was able to short-check flying cdg-lhr-sfo as i was hoping for a bump lhr-sfo (bmi conx to ua) and the bmi agent at cdg wouldn't let me take my wheels as a carry-on as they were above the ridiculous carry-on weight limit so i short checked them to lhr and took them on board with me.

n.b. i didn't get the bump and this was 10 days before the foolish 1 carry-on bag limit in the u.k (and there was so much room in the o/h bins on the bmi flight because no-one had any "normal size" carry-ons that i could have crawled up there and slept stretched out)
